Whereas Ghana is not about to become a failed state, we face serious structural problems if we are to become a successful state.
We must stop the economic dependency culture by relying on our own resources to build our country. We must reduce external borrowing drastically.
We must develop our skills to exploit our abundant resources for the benefit of all our people.
We must build our own roads, railways and other infrastructure. We must mine our minerals, and extract oil and gas ourselves and stop giving out concessions to foreign interests.
Corruption must stop.
Above all, we must be wise.

Nevertheless, if care is not taken and things continue like what is happening now, I'm afraid, our dear country will join the African failed states club. The corruption, armed robbery, politicizing
of state institutions, etc. are too much. It seems there is no accountable and very responsible governance in Ghana now. The ruling class now are mindful of what they can loot from the state and not the good of the state. The SC must speak and speak boldly and fairly now. "Seesei dee enko yie koraa!!

The attainment of a failed state status is not a sudden flight. It's the (end) destination of a journey. We may have embarked on this journey inadvertently but the pace we travel will eventually determine how long it will take to arrive at the destination.
We have to consider the three indicators as warnings to us.
The tribal and political polarization is something every peace-loving and law abiding ghanaian citizen ought to be worried about. Persistence of political violence is the first indicator identified .Considering the dire implications for our country should there be a deterioration in the political situation isn't it a big surprise that the President is not already extending the olive branch to his political opponents? It appears our current crop of politicians thrive on confusion and division. That's fertile ground for those people who are in politics for the wrong reason . Why not Live and let's live? This must be music in the ears of all politicians and the citizenry because we rise and fall together.
The second indicator is the prevalence of mass starvation among the entire population. We've gone past the baby steps in this category and it's still work in progress. If we're united and looking out for each other one person going to bed hungry must be a source of worry for all of us. Hunger, like a raging fire might spread much faster than we're able to control once it gets started.
The third indicator is the presence and growth of gangs, criminals, arms and drug trafficking. They're already here with us though not yet in alarming proportions but how many more must die senselessly before we begin to act? Will anybody doubt anymore that there's a proliferation of guns in the system after all the increase in armed robbery and criminal activity? We have not as yet been able to put a lid on drug trafficking. It's rather on the ascendancy.
Our journey to a failed has already begun but we've choices. We can change the trajectory/the direction we are travelling, or stay on course till we arrive at the scheduled destination. The power is in our hands. Sticking our heads in the sand is not a choice. It may only make us feel a little safer temporarily but it won't be enough protection against the coming fierce storm . Now is the time to act.

Somalia is a good example of a failed state. They are trying to pick themselves up anyway but they are still a failed state.
Ghana is not a failed state but a pretty bad and weak one. We are taking care of ourselves but just. The really sorry side is the fact that we are not improving - indeed, we are even going backwards. The blame squarely lies on ALL our leaders who have failed to make our country a "real" country. The failed leaders are: Rawlings, Kufuor, Mills, Mahama (so far) and all the ministers who worked with them and all the parliamentarians. Before them, the leaders who failed us were the NLC guys, Acheampong, Akuffo.
Busia and Limman played for too short a time to be rated.

When a gang of NDC lawyers and politicians collude to steal 51 million from the state, when the gas sector is ruled by fantis and oil by the ewes, and the northerners steal an election (technically a coup d'etat) you don't see signs of a failed state in the making. Ghana is at the cusp of implosion. There are enough landmines laid. Who knows the Supreme Court may provide the triggers.
