SSA is never gonna industrialize or even urbanize properly.Industrialization requires appreciation of complex workings, precision and lots of R&D but as things stand i fail to see africa taking off industrially. We have failed the simplest things like trash collection, civilised defecation(not on street side) and observing proper town plannning. So if we have such a hard time observing these simple rules then we ain't never gonna be ready to observe the rules of more complex industrial processes.Liberia and Haiti have been at this thing of nation building for 100yrs+ yet they ain't anywhere near the promised land and its all bcoz they behave like us- meaning they too have a hard time observing the strict rules of success.

As long as we continue to give our resources for free to capitalists, and swallow the doctrine that, that govt. should not be in business but must create the enabling environment for private companies to thrive, this is what we get. It is like going to war and your opponent tells you to lay down your arms. Our hands are tied to our backs as Africa is being raped from all angles.
The governments of Africa need to take over our resources and use the income to build roads, schools, industries, hospitals and high rise residential accommodation for their citizens. Read Dr.Kwame Nkrumah's books at www.panafbooks.com

The continental African perspective, even the SSA perspective, is necessarily broad. Lessons are not always particular to a specific country.
Further, one ought to be very careful in the effort to link "slum" and "urban poverty" with "crime" in urban areas/slums, when talking broadly about urbanization in Africa, or in any other place or "continent." The urban literature is not definitive on that score, in fact, is it mostly contrary.
And we agree. "... diversification of economic activities" is important in making progress that would matter to the poor in Ghana's urban regions, and the rest of Ghana, in the end.
The development of the service sector (read Tourism, for instance) is a great promise. Then there is the learning industry that universities can spearhead, with prodding and assistance from the government. None of these is "industry" in the traditional sense.
Thanks Paul Frimpong.
