I don't know why they keep dumping every damn project in Greater Accra. The Fanti areas like Winneba and Kasoa have close proximity to Accra, so why not locate the new airport in that area and take some of the pressure off Greater Accra ?
They keep complaining about overcrowding in Accra and yet the current government policies are not geared at solving the problem.

the Fantis were mislead into believing ndc meant well and would continue the path of honesty and integrity set by mills . slowly eyes have been opened to see the reality of this hegemonic ayigbe selfish incompetent corrupt govt. from now on it will be each his own and ndc will never carry the day again in any of the Akan territories , only ppp cpp or npp will pass. the demographics of the country have changed and now the Fantis speaking people of western and central regions have the numbers to form their own state if pushed into war by these wish to dominate and buga buga oppress ewe led govt. it is not enough that they killed mills now they push further to put the people into poverty and misery hoping to break the spirit of the people as they have been trying to do since before kotoka. first it was the brain drain that took most of the intellectuals away to serve some pointless civil service that ignored their own people instead of decentralization, then the schools were opened to all except those that built and nurtured them in the first place. then came the period of deny any gainful employment so they were forced to emigrate to other lands. then all projects and industry that made logical sense including sustainability were placed elsewhere or not even processed. so today even the tradition industry the ordinary man could do to scratch a living are purposely being neglected or destroyed such as the fishing industry and the farming. we see all and say no more , long live the republic of Akan

Kotoka airport cannot expand beyond its size. It is landlocked .. Period. One advice to the minister; since you guys don't see beyond your nose, remember that there will be a heavy traffic between the new airport and Accra.. The current motorway cannot support such airport. Just imagine taking one hour to go round the Tema end roundabout ? As for Kumasi is out. You don't have trusted and viable connections flights that concerns passengers when they are to take internal flights. Just imagine you taking a Nigerian local flight after arriving in that country? It is the most tormenting part of a journey like that. So far most passengers coming Ghana come to Accra for their business and conferences.

If you don't know, there were numerous international flights between Kumasi and other West African countries. Kumasi is centrally located. All the European airlines pass through Northern and Central Ghana before they reach Accra. Why can't Kumasi Airport be upgraded so that it can handle wide body aircrafts? It's just pure stupidity on the part of Ghanaians. Even KLM once landed a plane in Kumasi in the 70's when there was work being done at Accra airport and planes couldn't land there.

We are not arguing that the "new" airport ought to built in Kumasi, if one is needed in the first place.
However, we know that at a certain scale, decentralization is good for an entire nation.
We are thinking you will agree with us on this one: More reflection and planning are required before massive commitment of public funds for what so far looks like a poorly defined want masquerading as a need.
Thanks.

I like the analysis in the article, but disagree with Prof on two fronts...rather sending the international airport to Kumasi and his inability to tell us exactly the status of KIA. If per the analysis we need a 9.4 square mile to cater for an expanded international airport, what is the size of KIA? What will be major constraining factor if we want to rather expand the KIA? Sometimes it is easy criticizing from the outside, and a different ball game when you're in the middle of the game.
Cynically, I think that Prof only used this article to sell himself. If Prof want to be bought a good price, he should send an unsolicited paper to the Minister advising her rather than such critics in a media fora that normally gets no attention.

We are only saying that if the Ministry thinks that we need a "new international airport", 18,000 acres is a lot more land than necessary or required.
Further, the Minister and the Ministry are the right position to order a Master Plan, Parking Plan Study, or review of all existing plans as part of the effort to determine "exactly the status of KIA" with respect to the "parking space" deficiencies.

Now, has someone ever thought of moving the Airforce from their section of the KIA and expanding the civilian section to that area? If one runaway can be derived from that section, it can be used for domestic flights, thus relieving pressure on the present civilian area.

Now we have eastern corridor roads, volta vars, vasity at somanya. international airport at ningo prampram etc etc.
What has P V done for his own people for all these years? Shame onto you!

Prof Lungu,I also think we do not need a new airport in Accra as the second airport in a place where they don't get even 50 flights a day at least for now but the same time I don't agree with you that the land in question is too big for the airport and to me they can even add more since airports are built to take care of future expansion works and claiming to be airport planning expert not in Ghana but in the US I think you should know better.
For example in your own backyard, the Dulles International Airport which is not that big as compare to others in the US it is sitting on a 11,830 acres of land while Denver International Airport is sitting on a 53sq miles or 137.8sq KM land because these areas were acquired to take care of future expansion works and as I'm writing you can see that all these airports and others are still building new structures or improving on what is already there.
About Kotoka I can say that at least for now the land around the airport can be used to expand the airport to reach international standard if we really know what we are doing.
Just look at the large land in front of the so called parking lot which can rather be used as the parking lot while the space for the parking lot is used to expand the building while they make use of the other areas to build jetway bridges for the larger aircrafts and then create a place for the commuter planes on the domestic and West African routes.
They can also make good use of the land around the military area as suggested by Andy and they can pay compesation to some of the people too close to the airport especially those close to the runway to move paving the way for the expansion of the airport.
At the moment I don't think Kotoka is overstreched as they want us to believe unless they do not know what the are doing.
If we are thinking of moving Kotoka to that area that is fine but another airport for Accra is not necessary since the airlines that come to Accra are not that many to call for another airport in addition to Kotoka.
As soon as we acquire this land the next thing we will hear is the land owners or the chiefs telling us we have to name the airport Ningo airport or Prampram airport so the best thing to do to avoid this nonsense in future is to make it clear to them that we are moving Kotoka there and if they like they accept it or keep their land.
I just hope the rational behind this so called new airport is not to destroy Kotoka to distribute the land to their friends, family members and cronies.

We are all for objective, thoughtful analyses of public requirements, versus requirements driven by other interests.
I agree with you on all fronts.
The 6,000 acre figure would be for aircraft operations, to include safety areas for the protection of the public. Typically, areas on the environs would be protected airport overlays where certain types of economic activities would not be recommended/allowed. We do not think there would be a compelling government interest for the government to acquire so much land on the environs of a 6,000-acre airport.
On checking....
Boulder International Airport: 140 acres, with a 6,000-acre circulation area where pilots are required to avoid overflights below 6,500 feet MSL.
Dulles International Airport: 11,830 acres of which about 5,000 acres are used for aircraft operations
Houston Hobby Airport: 1,304 acres, with four runways.
George Bush International Airport, Houston: The number two airport in Texas, 17th world's busiest airport with approx. 43-million-passengers-per-year throughput, covers about 10,000 acres.
Yes, Ghana-centered critical minds must prevail. If Kotoka is not "overstretched", then critical minds must prevail and influence the planning effort!
Thanks.
