Our educational system lacks creativity, problem solving skills, and critical reasoning ability.
We will not go anywhere until esp higher education is reformed in Africa.
The education system as set up by the colonial master was to train local student to come and "serve" the Colonial masters at that time. This was a time when the white men were doing all the thinking for us, after they left the educational system remained so.
And now the system still churns students who are only trained to come and "serve" instead of "solve"..and the solving is really what we need now. This critical part of education is seriously missing in Africa.
The next African leader to tackle this giant problem will be the next Nkrumah.

Lord have mercy on our educational system. Truly, our educational system has fallen into an irredeemable abyss if this passes for the benchmark of excellence at the premier University.

Good observation! It was very hard for me to absorb the idea behind the write-up. Perhaps, I'm not smart enough or maybe the writer does not provide good argument to support and defend his ideas. For instance, there is a repetition of idea in paragraph six and seven. Below is a quote from paragraph six which makes no sense; not to talk of the errors.
On the side of students, we must study the problems, get the solutions through deliberation and as Ghanaian as we are go to the real world and patriotically eradicate the problem which can be is well nurtured by our beloved teachers operating on our African literature. And I ask how can we do this when the courses we offer at the tertiary level have no relation to the jobs and vocations in the country?"

In your last but one paragraph, you coined the phrase, "traces of missionary structures" as one of the causes of our failed educational system. Can you please explain it? Also, how can 'we' "eradicate and restructure our formal educational system"?

WE always blame the West and our colonialists who structured our educational system for us since 1896 and we dont MENTION our weakness in failing to modify or modernise the system despite being in touch with the West/Colonialists studying in their EVER-CHANGING system in their domains that has undergone many changes since. The present Western System educates the mind to be productive, self-initiative and creative through learning by discovery and not chew-pour-pass-and-forget unable to make use of the concepts stuck in the brains. It is hard time we DEVIATE FROM THE SAME OLD STYLE OF LEARNING/TEACHING by INDUCTIVE METHODS TO DEDUCTIVE METHOD to equip the brain with all the SEVEN FACTORS OF INTELLIGENCE instead of dwelling on only one -rote memory education. It is expensive method but it can be cost-effectively done. PLEASE STOP BLAMING THE WEST BUT blame OURSELVES AND OUR DEFICIENCIES/INABILITY TO EFFECT THE CHANGE due to the ROUND-PEGS-IN SQUARE-HOLES GOVENANCE/LEADERSHIP. Our inability to effect a change tells on many other aspects of our lifestyle from GOVERNANCE to CIVIL SERVICE to DOMESTIC family/social LIFE to ENVIRONMENT, TRADE, INDUSTRILISATION and COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES. The change should come from above, the leadership of the country not GOD.

HOWEVER,I DOUBT VERY MUCH IF,THE NATION IS ENRICHED WITH SCHOLARS AND LECTURERS AND PROFESSORS.
WHY IS OUR INFRASTRUCTURE STILL IN SHAMBLES AND WHY ARE WE POOR,
EDUCATED SOCIETIES TRANSFORMS THEIR NATIONS.
HAVE THESE PEOPLE BEEN IN THE POSITION TO DELIVER IN SCIENCE, TECNOLOGY AND INNOVATION TO STIMULATE DYNAMIC INDUSTRIES,MANUFACTURING AND PROCESSING PLANTS TO TRANSFORM THE NATION TO PROSPERITY.
IF YOU LOOK AROUND TODAY, THE EDUCATED DO WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE THEM WITH EVERYTHING, FAILING TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE OBLIGED AND COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING A KNOWLEDGE DRIVEN ECONOMY IN THE COUNTRY.
PRESENTLY IN GHANA, THOSE HOLDING THE ECONOMY AFLOAT ARE THE SEMI SKILLED TRADESMEN,CARPENTERS, TAYLORS, GOLD AND BLACKSMITHS AND ILLITERATE PEASANT FARMERS WITH THEIR LESS PRECISION PRODUCTS IN THE MARKETS.
WHERE ARE THAT OF THE EDUCATED- NIL
IT IS TIME WE ATTACK WEAKNESS IN OUR WORKFORCE SKILLS.
THESE DISTINTIVE CAPABILITIES MUST BE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CREATIVITY TO HELP GENERATE PRODUCTIVITY, VALUED GOODs AND SERVICES IN THE COUNTRY.
IT IS ALSO TIME THAT OUR PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN GHANA BE THE HEART OF OUR PRODUCTIVITY CAPACITY AND AS POWERFUL DRIVERS OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES IN GHANA.
WITHOUT A CHANGE OF THE SET OF ATTITUDES OF THE SO CALLED EDUCATED,WE WILL REMAIN BACKWARD, UNDERDEVELOPED AND POOR.
