This is counterfactual historicizing. Politics and democracy have always occured along the fractured lines of interest groups: classes, regions, ideological camps, ethnicity, race, economic enclaves, immigrants and natives, ruralists and urbanites, commoners and aristocrats, etc. The problem in Ghana is that we are so impoverished, benighted, and uneducated to the extent that we can't think as individuals and/or groups however defined!
