All your statement fall short of qualities of a leader. Akwasi Appiah is a leader, in order for him to have control over the resources available to him, discipline must be commanded and to serve as severe notice to other players that he is indeed in charge of the team not irrational being like this writer. His piece is emotion centered and that does not warrant effective leadership.
German teams are always solid and do well in all competitions because, good or equally good players in the team respect leadership, are committed to play and very dedicated to put PRIDE aside and serve.
Good, best players are self destructive like Mario Balotelli, but it takes a strong leader to discipline him. Look at how many times Mario has been left out of both National and league games due to his stupidity.
In order for the team to win games, discipline is indeed warranted and no matter how gifted, stupid hyped one is, he is not above any other team mate or on top of Ghana. Remember, there was Abdul Razak, Osei Kofi, Robert Mensah, Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah etc in the blackstar as untouchable. They re all gone and yet Black star continue to produce talents.
A good coach will not allow an individual to hold National Team at Ransom and I applaud Akwasi Appiah for his leadership and qualities.

Dede's injury has not been assessed by Ghana's doctors so what happens if Dede ends up been not fully fit? Fabio Capello believed the FA were going ahead of themselves to pronounce JT guilty, does that apply here? From 5th to 9th, is that a day or 2? IF THE TEAM DOCTOR N COACH DETERMINES THAT THEY CANT USE YOU, FINE. MATTER MUST TAKE MATTER GO. DID IT OCCUR TO YOU THAT DEDE COULD POSSIBLE BE LYING ABOUT HIS EXCUSE, HENCE THE REASON WHY HE DIDNT SHOW UP TO CAMP AS AGREED UPON?

I agree with the article in one but disagree in the other. The strict guide line the coach first brought to public to show that he also could be tough was what placed him in a tight corner to make such a drastic decision. First of all, he went against his decision on how many to call to camp. With this mistake, the public went after him vigorously. So when Dede's issue was brought up, in order for the coach to not to make any mistake again by going against his word twice in just within a month, he had to stand by his word.
Next time, Coach Appiah just has to be himself as we all know him to be. He is a nice guy and very flexible with his decisions. He shouldn't be like any other coach but himself. The Kwasi Appiah who gives second chances shouldn't set any bar that would later put him is such a tight space to make hash decisions. For this part of the article, I do agree with the writer.
Excluding Andrea Ayew from the squad, to me, is good. All the players could learn something from this harsh decision. This will be at the back of every players' mind that the coach is not joking with them no matter where a player is plying his trade or how much he makes.
Appiah could have came out to say, Dede is hurt and for what I indicated as taking only fit players, he has been left out for this year's AFCON tournament but will be called when the player is healed. There, you silence whatever the critics have to say. In other words, when the player is hurt, what do you want the coach to do with him? He can't perform in any of the coach's training section, and therefore, wouldn't benefit anyone including the country when he is taking to the tournament.
Like I said, I hope the coach has the brains of the game to back his strict bar-set up. He will need to plan his games very well to be able to overcome this chaos. If only he could map up the games well to get us to the finals or even to win the third place, his future will be bright and all hands would be on deck.
I have a little confidence in him because he hasn't been tested yet and this is the time to such a test. His record so far is not impressive but I hope he makes it big in this coming tournament.

The facts surrounding this matter were not well explained in this article by Papa Appiah who has already shown his bias following his other comments and now his full article. I cannot fault him for that but he needs to be factually accurate. As far as I have been following this case..Dede was reported by his Club to have been injured and the National team Coach requested him to report so the Ghana Team doctor will assess him, so he can receive first class treatment at the Dubai Training Camp due to the World-class facilities available. A request was made to his team and they released him to the national team. But he chose to report on Wednesday the same day that the list is expected to be faxed to CAF. So, what do you do if you have set criteria for the team... Do you bend that backward when you are not even sure if he can recover in case he is indeed injured...I keep on asking why couldn't he discuss this issue with the coach so he can stand by his decision and defend why he should report late or like he did for Asamoah Djan?...If Djan can do it why couldn't he? And why is he in training with his French Team as early as last Monday(if indeed he is injured) and couldn't do that for his national team. The posture wasn't the best and as far as I love him I need to scold him for being too personal in this case!!!

First of all, why are you calling someone a moron? The writer is only speaking his mind and should not be insulted. Dede has been playing for his club team (starting) so why should he be dropped from the team bcs he is coming late to training camp. This reminds of Allen Iverson's comment "Practice? We are not talking about the game, Practice?" Andre should be given a chance to report to camp and only team doctors should eliminate him from the squad. I know Kwesi Appiah is trying to prove a point but this is not the time to do so. Remember that players like Dede doesn't need to play for Ghana but he is just a patriot. Dede's issue is this. His club said he's injured and there could be the possibility of he not making it to the nations cup. The GFA suspecting foul play wanted the player to come down for a 2nd review in Abu Dhabi since there are good enough doctors to take care of him out there. On that basis his club released him, the GFA sent flight ticket and all that and the boy started giving excuses. The coach on the other hand wanted to know the extent of injury to decide what to do but Dede claimed he'll touch down on teusday. That was when the coach made his decision. What if the boy shows up truely unfit? It means whatever the coach is masterminding has been tampered with. The coach needs to be spared taking last minute decisions for a crucial tournament such as this. He says, he can make do with what he currently has in camp. If he fails, he'll not face the wrath of Ghanaians with anybody but himself. I therefore agree with his decision.

Why did England take an injured Wayne Rooney to the World cup even though they knew he could only play in the knock-out stages, if at all? And is there anybody here who can deny the especial contribution of Andre to the team? What kind of nonsense is this? My brother, have you ever experienced any injury in your life before? Do you know what difference to the injured a day or two of rest can do? On the other hand, why the rush on the part of the Ghana coach when the boy is coming anyway? Is it now that he is going to coach him how to play- and all those training sessions, what is there at all that he cannot tell Ayew later? Kwasi Appiah's statement hints that he took his decision on Monday morning. If the player has been asked to come on monday, why not wait till the end of the day before you take any decision? Other pieces of information on the ghanasoccernet.com website indicates that the player diverted to join his colleagues in North Africa only after he was axed from the black stars squad, so what was the guarantee that he would not even have made it by close of day on monday? The impression I get is that the coach had all the time wanted to take him out, and quickly acted on the slightest chance. Ghana is for all of us, and all must be allowed to play contribute their quota to lift the nation. My question is, are players machines?

It appears Papa Appiah is obsessed with bashing coach Akwasi Appiah. If you really don't blame Akwasi like you are saying but the GFA then why don't you take the FA to task. Why are you wasting a lifetime developing negatives in a dark room? Even light at the tunnel's end is to you the light of the oncoming train. Your other obsession is with foreign coaches. Whilst some of them are in a class of their own they never got there in a sudden flight. The problem is not Akwasi Appiah. It's our entire system. When we've learned to crawl, we'll learn to walk, then run and perhaps fly. Picking a fight with Akwasi Appiah as frequently as you do will lead to chronic depression. Mr Quick Fix, since you know how to fix the coach you must have also the panacea for fixing our country's ills. Why don't you go ahead and fix the entire nation of its numerous ills. That'd give you instant fame and celebrity status. I guess after you're done with fixing Akwasi Appiah the coach you'll fix our president too. Maybe a foreign coach for the national teams and a foreign president perhaps from China, the US or Germany will fix all our problems in one year.

jss/sss or jhs/shs has truly been harmful to Ghana. We have simply lost our ability to comprehend holistic reasoning behind a write-up. Whatever happened to English comprehension. The writer's meta-thesis is not that one player's exclusion will cause us the championship. Rather, he faulted THE PROCESS of player participation (or non-participation) based on an obstinate, inflexible "laws" simply to show who is in charge. Anybody familiar with complex decision making and management understands that discipline must be tempered with flexbility, all along keeping the grand objective in focus. Nobody encourages indiscipline in the BS. But at the same time iron-fist discipline without congnizance of the unique circumstances of individuals is a fundamental flaw in management. This neither about Kwesi Appiah nor Dede Ayew. It is about a process that ensures goal achievement. And quite honestly, I am not sure whether the approach is the right one. The question is who is the next to fall on the sword of draconian rules probably because of a minor disagreement in camp?

Big English does not play football. We need everyone in camp to blend the new players with the old players. We need to do this early enough before we submit our final list and time is not on our side.We need the full compliment of the team to plot strategies and use different players at different positions because the old should blend with the new players before we play the friendlies. Why refuse assessment of your fitness by team Doctors? What did the Serbian coaches achieve for Ghana? Kwesi,i pray that you achieve something without these over blotted Ayew brothers, and believe that God will be on your side.I have been thinking that by now Abedi will counsel his children that in spite of being the 3 time Africa best ,he failed to achieve nothing for Ghana apart from Wafu Cup.He was so selfish in his days that strikers playing with him always had a problem with him. They run into open space and he will fail to release the ball early except he is in a tight situation.Odartey tried emulating Abedi Pele's play and he sunk into oblivion so early, for such a promising player. He will ask for a different hotel to sleep in whilst the rest will be in one place. It is YAHYA MOHAMMED WE WILL MISS NOT THE AYEWS.Watch Barcelona play and you realize that they hardly hang too much on the ball and if they loose the ball, they chase the opponent till they get the ball back, but these Ayews handle the ball for too long and if the ball is taken from them, they refuse to go for the ball, putting a lot of pressure on the defenders. Some of us have seen Great players, like the Osei Kofi's,Baba Yara's, Polo etc, yet never saw them display such arrogance, yet these over-hyped Ayew brothers come no where near them.I swear those days you go to stadium to watch beautiful soccer, beautiful goals. Those supporting indiscipline should bow their heads in shame

Big brother, "Big English"? Are you serious? By the way just in case you think I am hiding behind big English without knowledge of the game, then please reconsider. I didn't make it to stardom but I still relish my days playing against the likes of Ablade Kumah (a year my senior in middle school but grew up in the same neighbourhood). Other senior colleagues will be Hope Sewornu, Sonny Ahmed etc. others I played colts soccer against include CK Akunnor, Dan Addo, etc. You see, not here to tout my horn. Just saying sometimes we got to take a pragmatic approach not clad in iron rules. You seem to blame Abedi Pele for other adult's decision i.e. Kwesi Appiah and Ayew. I was never a fan of Abedi Pele in the early 90s. But boy, dont you think you are being unfair to him and his boys? If Ayew and Jordan are ball hoggers that is a coaching problem, not Abedi's. Any coach who cannot correct that mistake has a fundamental flaw. The Ayew brothers are not the greatest Ghana has had, but they have significant utility to the curret team. If a player has been faithful and committed to the time for the most part and falters on one or two occasions does that undo all the past good deeds? So I advocate a comprehensive assessment of the situation before making a decision. And to be fair to Appiah, maybe he has. I am just not convinced by his statements that in fact that is case.

I humbly disagree with your assessement that Ayew was not given the opportunity to be assess by the team`s doctor as you stated. "And if it was to do with the fact that he was injured, then why did he not let the player come down to be assessed by the team doctors?" He was but refuse to come down. So as a coach, what do you think he should keep waiting on someone with disregard to the rules and discipline. Do you know Kwesi Appiah also has to meet CAF deadline and he can be punish for not doing so or even the whole may end up fortified the competition? This is about one person or tribe or any other thing. It is purely rules and regulation being followed.

Sometimes i listen and read comments made by some so-called football analysts and i wonder if they can run an organization of undisciplined people.Who ever you call yourself,i remember reading that the management team wanted Dede to report to the camp to be assessed by Doctors there. The time to assess the players and submit the final list is too close to call.Today in camp we have many players in midfield equal or far better than Dede.I have seen Dede walk out of a match to be substituted by Sulley and he refuses to shake his hands.I have seen and heard him struggle over the 10 jersey with Kojo Asamoah. i have heard about him struggle with senior players over captaincy etc.YOU NEEDED TO SEE THE LEVEL OF SELFISH PLAY EXHIBITED BY BOTH BROTHERS IN THE GHANA MALAWI MATCH at the Accra sports stadium which we needed more goals and their lackadaisical approach to the game.Is it because Kwesi is a Prophet not accepted in his own country?.The team will do better with disciplined players.Do you remember the 2 bros failed to respond to the team Kwesi took to south Africa to win all Africa Games? They felt too big for that team.If you remember coach Sly Tetteh's TEAM WHICH WON THE UNDER 20 CHAMP-SHIP,IT TOOK INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE OF DOMINIC ADIYIAH,,RANSFORD Osei and Agyeman Badu e.t.c. to win the cup not his shouting on the field of play to some senior players which he wanted to replicate in the black stars.Dede has a long way to go and those who love him should encourage him to be disciplined and shed off his arrogance.DO YOU ALSO REMEMBER ,AND DID YOU READ HIS ARROGANT APOLOGY LETTER TO THE COACH AND THE GFA.what is wrong with some Ghanaian's who will blast Kwesi for accepting his apology and the next time he says enough is enough you turn round to speak rubbish.

I don't know where you're coming from and don't how much football you know to make such wide sweeping statements abt the B'Stars coach. If you really know what you're talking abt, you can't be mentioning Cantona and Ayew in the same breath with the kind of point you're making here. Ayew is young and knowledgeably still maturing. Cantona was an phenomenon on his own and had a class of his own. You can only compare Cantona with himself, if at all. It appears Ayew was being affected by other issues aside of injuries. He needs to respect his coach...rather tell the coach I'd rather my own Doctors checked me out. Why then do we have team doctors, particularly when you claim Ayews injury was not serious? Are Ghanaian doctors not good enough? Do players bring their own doctors to camp during tournaments? I rest my case.

...to get rid of an unpopular player.... Now Andre Ayew is an unpopular player in Ghana or the camp? Is this not clueless on your part Papa Appiah?
Further inferences and comparisons made regarding Capello and Ferguson. This is woefully misplaced and clueless abi. A good example will have been Aime Jacque and the France team before the World Cup in 98. And if you care to know Alex Ferguson will not only drop Andre Ayew but fine him two weeks pay ask Rooney. Have a paradigm shift and think big and think success for Africans by Africans. A little history of Ghana's previous CAN success were all achieved by a Ghanaian manager not a white man. Grow up!

The action taken by the coach is right. If a player is injured, any good coach would like to assess him before deciding to name him in the final list.
Therefore Awasi Appiah cannot be blamed.

So don`t bore us with your notion that Ghana would be thrashed b`cos Ayew is out!!! We may win or not, with or without him,but still must take its course. Its apparent that the author is this state of opinion is definately a monday morning coach.I doubt if Papa Appiah has ever done sports or coached or even assistant coached any team at any level, otherwise he would not have written what he did. When you are a coach everything falls on you.You are praised for being good when ur team wins and you are lambasted for being a waste of flesh when ur team loses.Even the great ones like Fergusson,Wenger and 'the special one'have all at one time or another been criticised for getting it all wron, according to the supporters and fans. What I don't like about ur piece is the personalisation in it.Afootball team is made up of individuals who come together and paly as one unit, and not individuals who come together and try to showcase individual talents. When a player misses a whole mini camp as in this case, the coach has lost the opportunity to see how he will blend with the other players who will be on the field with him and to the tactics he will use in the game.if a player is not availabe at the camp there is no way you can assess him.Players are called into the national team based on their performances in their individual teams, but there is no guarantee that the system they excelled so much in their team is the same system that tha national team coach will use.Aguy says'coach I have an injury so let me stay with my doctors in france for a few days to check it out'.What does that say about the level of confidence the guy has in the medical team of the national team he is playing for/The coach leaves him in and the guy comes back or later calls the coach to tell him that the injury is serious and he therefore cannot play. The deadline for submission of players is up and now the coach is shorthanded by one player.I think we out to applaud Appiah rather than castigating him.National teams are not like club sisde where players are treated differently. All who are called into a national team are tsars and should all operate under one code of conduct or else the coach is in for trouble.Remember the 'Bochum dissaster'seek the real stories behind the scenes and you will realise that certain things and statements that happened at half time in the dressing room created the 6 goals that we conceeded. When you were talking about fergusson you forgot to addthe number of players who fell foul with him and had to leave united.eg Beckham,Vanistelroy to mention a couple.Setting bad examples in a setting such as the national team is a recipe for disaster.I congratulate our coach for making a very difficult decision but to be fair to him he made the right one.No one shd be made to feel that they are indispensable in a team game and that there are some players they combine well with and some that they don't.Contrary to what the 'against people'are wishing for we shall have a good tournament. You can't keep doing the same things and get different results.Ivory coast is a lesson we should learn from.Don't be afraid to make mistakes, how eles can you make corrections.

Papa Appiah - save your thoughts for something better - you are talking to a people who suffered horrific beatings and were frightened to their bone during childhood and sadly believe that discipline for the sake of it yields results - I agree with you - the best coaches in the world have the best players but even collecting these players and using them has always been a Ghanaian dilemma) - try managing any of the great footballers - from Rooney, Messi, Ronahldo, Eto-O, Drogba, Kevin Prince Boateng etc, etc and you will find that it takes a different mindset to manage the best humans. We are not there yet and you will make enemies when you try to preach less punishment (a replacement for the beatings imbibed into our consciousness from childhood). To compensate for this madness, we have replaced "doing well" with 'victory' and "mediocrity" with 'ok' so long as somebody has been sacrificed before the event. - save your thoughts for something better.
