Nkrumah had the same problem when he returned to Ghana as a Secretary of UGCC and later formed the CPP. Nzema elites would not support him for the same "skin pain" reasons. He was called all names to discredit his reputation. Hope the critics will join with Dr. Yankey and the three elected Members of Assembly to think of how to lobby the Government now to develop/educate the Nzemaland for our future children by the oil companies and stop the criticisms that lead us no where. The oil exploitation in Nzema is a timing bomb that is awaiting and we Nzemas will suffer more than the inland nationals. The Asantehene is perhaps enjoying a type of Royalties from the Gold exploitation on his land but the Nzema Chiefs are flexing their muscles to show who has more power. This man has been convicted by due process by courts in Ghana of corruption.
He has also been namesd as serious bribe taker in the infamous Mabey & Johnson case in London. It is worth noting that in this case Mabey & Johnson themselves, in their plea of guilty to the charges of corruption, named as him as one of the Ghanaian Ministers to whom they had paid bribes and the company was able to produce all the bank cheques and bank account numbers held in his name into which the bribe monies were paid.
This evidence was never investigated in Ghana although the SFO in London was willing to produce it to the appropriate Ghanaian authorities.
At the time the Mabey & Johnson case was exposed in the media Sipa Yankey said he would take legal action to clear his name - he has never done so - why not!!
It is inconceivable how anyone could then be appointed to run another Goverment project and administer state funds in these circumstances if the Goverment was serious in it's assertion that it takes allegations of bribery seriously.

He has also been convicted of corruption in Ghana and has served time in jail. Here he is again in charge of administering state projects and state funds, a position he was appointed to by the late President Attah Mills, after the allegations were made in London.

I admire your wish to stick to the issues but unfortunately alledged corruption on the part of Goverment Ministers and officials must become one of the major issues.
Numerous reports from such august bodies such as the United Nations over many years have identified corruption as one of the major impediments to development in countries such a Ghana.
The manner in which corruption is either condemned or accepted must therefore be a major political issue if we are to achieve developmental excellence in the future.
Unfortunately as many of the comments on this article quite clearly demonstrate there remains a grave unwillingness or intellectual weakness and inabilty to take the issue of corruption seriously.

The man had been cleared of Mabey and Johnson scandal by the CID of Ghana Police but still you use it against him. Just because someone accuses you of act, does it make it true? What if I accused you all of killing somebody and the police just accepted my word. Then you would be all in jail. If you were to really dig deep into the Quality Grain case you will see that the judge basically put these men in jail because they needed someone to blame. Since that's what Ghanaians always want to see, someone go down for a problem. Also if you are going to wrongly attack someone like this, at least have the decency to get the man's name right. A project like this does not just go up overnight, but if we would rather see some shoddy work go up for the sake of having it ready immediately then we can keep on this track of negativity. No true Nzema person will write an article attacking someone who is obviuosly working hard to improve the Nzema land and Ghana as a whole.

He may have been cleared by the Ghanaian police along with the other high profile officials who were named in the Mabey & Johnson case but the question remains - why did Mabey & Johnson plead guilty to bribing him and produced all the documentary evidence including cheques and bank account numbers to show that they had done so - evidence which was sufficient to persuade one of the UK leading criminal judges that they had committed an act of bribery. The judge not only found the firm guilty of the offence (and fined them £6,500,000) but he awarded Ghana £650,000 compensation for the damage the act of bribery had done the state.
The second question is whether the police followed the correct procedures in requesting the London SFO's assistance in investigating the offence so far as Ghanaian law was concerned. Reports of their investigation and of the AG'S involvement appear to be very unclear on this point.
To put it bluntly their investigation appears to have been very perfunctory at the least and appeared to rely almost entirely on written statements from the accused who were hardly likely to admit their guilt depite the evidence that was shown to the judge in the London trial.
The fact is that this case was highly embarrasing for the newly elected NDC Goverment as approx £4,000,000 of the Mabey & Johnson bribery fund remains unaccounted for and the quicker it could be disposed of the better.
