The challenges of maths goes beyond Basic level but starting from KG and from our homes as well as peers.
Mostly, the facilitators from KG make maths unattractive due to ill background and poor pedagogy. Hence the beginning of the bane in almighty maths.
To address this, qualify FACILITATORS should be employed to handle maths at that level and lower primary and upper primary as well.
Parents/ guardians and peers as well as the general public demotivate learners when it comes maths by their words.
Public especially parents, should rather use their time in finding strategies to support their wards who are mathematically handicapped or challenged.
Government can not be left out when finding a solution to mathematics in various educational institutions. There should be conscious plan in place to avert the situation. By making modern TLM readily available in our schools for effective delivery of curriculum.

Mathematics is such a very important discipline, students must be encouraged to pursue it in addition to Elective Maths, with all seriousness.
Elective Maths is compulsory for Science students. And for students who may not get the opportunity of pursuing Science, Elective Maths. should be an integral part of the future Business or Arts students.
The truth is that about 60% of the contents of each discipline are the same; INDICES & LOGS, SURDS, TRIG., VECTORS, PROB., STATS., AP & GP. etc. In addition, all the usual rudiments of Arithmetic/Algebraic/Geometric manipulations are all ingrained in both disciplines.
Students must be encouraged to copy questions in textbooks, topic by topic. The desire of the student must be to attempt each question on his/her own, before exploring worked example solutions.
Every Maths question has at least 2 or 3 methods of solving it, even as Scripture posit that Truth is established by 2 or 3 witnesses.
A student must be challenged to solve problems using alternative approaches so that he/she does not constrain himself/herself in a box.
A student should not be satisfied with just arriving at an answer to a problem, but must explore other methods of solving the same problem.
Ask any JHS/SHS student to solve 1 - 3/17. He or she may not be able to give you the answer readily, because he/she must resort to finding the LCM, first, before proceeding. However, right from primary level, fractions must be taught with the understanding that when a 1 whole bar is divided into 17 equal pieces, each is 1/17 in length. Therefore, if I take 3 of such pieces, I have 3/17 length of the 1 whole bar. Therefore, I am left with 14 of such pieces, hence I have 14/17 as my answer. Equally, 1 - 2/15 = 13/15.
Thus, appealing approaches should be introduced to the pupils, right from start.
ELECTIVE MATHS is not as difficult as people may think. It is all about copying questions, in advance, and attempting them.
Even if Parents have no idea about the Discipline, at least, they can supervise to ensure that their wards have copied questions(leave space for alternative solutions of each question) topic by topic, using A4 papers, and well filed.
God has endowed so much in man/women. However, the hidden talent would become manifest if students are encouraged and guided.
