No MC For Ghana Music Awards?

Tick tock, tick tock as the clock moves, the D-day for the Ghana Music Awards draws closer and closer.

With less than ten days to the main event at the over six thousand capacity giant Dome at the Accra International Conference Centre, nobody has been named yet,as MC for the biggest entertainment show on the nation's calendar.

The Ghana Music Awards, which has been running consistently for the past eleven years now, had Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show host, Kwami Sefa Kayi (Chairman), as the MC for the first eight years of the event ( from 1999-2007). However, Charter House, organizers of the event changed the MC in 2008 and "experimented" with Samini and Joy Fm’s “Lunch Time Rhythms” host Doreeh Andoh as MCs.

"Experiment", that was the official explanation offered by Charter House, when asked about the absence of the ace broadcaster.

Last year, they went on with their risky "experiment" with MTN icon and Afro Reggae singer, Samini, again but this time with UK-based TV host Dentaa and hiplife artiste Obour. After last year’s event, the three MCs were heavily criticized, for their poor performance and for dragging the show unnecessarily.

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010, and surprisingly, not even the event organizers can tell who is going to anchor the much anticipated programme. When peacefmonline made a call through to Fred Darko of Charter House, producer of the event, he declined to comment on the issue.

According to Fred they were "still putting finishing touches" to the event, so as at now, he "cannot tell who will MC the show." When this reporter pushed Fred to the wall, he said there are some names they are considering, but stopped short of mentioning the names.

“Anybody who wants to know the MC for the show, should just come to the main event,” he told peacefmonline.

Meanwhile a quick check by peacefmonline disclosed that "resident" MC, Kwame Sefa Kayi has no intentions of climbing the GMA stage.

Peacefmonline can confidently state that Kwami Sefa Kayi will not be Emceeing this year’s event.

A close source to Sefa Kayi told peacefmonline that even though Charter House has placed several calls and made frantic efforts to convince “Chairman” to run the show, he (Kwami) has flatly declined.

Though the close confidante would not reveal the reasons behind Kwami's refusal, sources say Kwame is not too happy about how the organizers treated him over the years.

Two times MC, Samini is presently in far away UK and will obviously not be in town for the main event. TV host Dentaa is currently nursing her new born baby in UK. Though Obour and Doreen Andoh are in town, a source at Charter House says they are both not on the MC list.

So who will MC this year’s Ghana Music Awards?

It is quite obvious that, the organizers are really struggling for masters of ceremony for perhaps the most glamorous and biggest entertainment event in Ghana. Until the main event, peacefmonline will still be wondering who will get the MC slot this year.
