Wesley Girls win Southern Zone inter-schools debate

Koforidua, Feb. 19, GNA-Wesley Girls Senior High School, Cape Coast, won the 51st Independence Anniversary celebration inter-schools debate for the southern zone with 34.7 points out of 50 points. Wesley Girls, Central Regional Champions beat Ghana Senior High School Eastern Regional Champions, who came second with 32.4 points. Archbishop Porter Senior High School who represented Western Region came third with 32.1 points.

Wesley Girls would meet the winner of the northern sector for the finals which is expected to come off before the 51st Independence Anniversary celebration on Thursday, March 6. Other schools that participated in the debate included Saint Margaret Mary Senior High School who represented Greater Accra Region and Anlo Senior High School who represented the Volta Region. The topic for the debate was "The Institution of Chieftaincy is inimical to our National Development".

Addressing the participants, Mrs Akosua Tekyiwa Adu, Eastern Regional Director of Education observed that, the standard of the debate showed that despite the short falls in the Senior Secondary School concept, much had been achieved.

She congratulated the students who participated in the debate and their teachers who supported them for the level of research in their preparations.

Mr Sam Asare-Gyebi, Chairman of the Judges Committee of the debate, called for more of such programmes for the youth in second cycle institutions to help take them away from anti-social practices.
