Miss Ghana crowned African Queen 2006

Maame Efua Darko, Ghana’s representative to the African Queen Beauty Pageant, organised by Tarru Promotions as part of activities marking the AU Banjul Summit, was on Saturday crowned African Queen 2006, at the Kairaba Hotel.

Maame Efua emerged the winner out of twenty other African beauties from African Union member states, such as Benin, The Gambia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali and Niger, among others.

The Gambia’s Beauty Queen, Tida Camara, took second position, while Ida, Miss Ethopia, emerged third. The winner was awarded a cash prize of D100, 000, a mobile phone and a television set from the LG, another mobile phone from Gamcel, a D5000 shopping ticket from Wedads and other cash prizes in Western Union vouchers. Tida Camara received a cash prize of D50, 000, a radio - TV player from the LG and a mobile phone from Gamcel, while Miss Ethiopia was awarded D25, 000, and two sets of mobile phones from the LG and Gamcel. All other contestants received gifts from Wedadas, and other prizes.

Maame Efua, Tida and Ida will today commence a week-long tour of key institutions in the country, such as the African Union head office, the Santa Yalla Support Society and some villages.

All the contestants are currently lodging at Fajara Hotel. Miss Ethiopia will however leave for home on Tuesday. The event was graced by Her Excellency, Dr Isatou Njie Saidy, Vice President of The Gambia, ministers, diplomats and other dignitaries.
