Obuor sweeps five awards at Ghana Music Awards

Accra, May 1, GNA - Ace Hiplife Artiste, Obuor on Saturday, swept five awards at the Sixth Ghana Music Awards, with his hit song "Konkontibaa' winning the top grand award, most popular song of the year.

Konkontiba took the topmost award, for being the most popular song of the year 2004 as adjudged by the selection and planning committee and the general public.

"Konkontibaa" beat other songs in the category like "Nipa" by Ester Smith, "Scenti No" by Sdney and Fefe Na Efe by Tic Tac. Obuor also Known as Bice Osei Kuffour took the Artiste of Year Award, Hiplife Artise of the Year, Hiplife Song of the Year, and the Hiplife Album of the Year. with his Album Atumpan.

The Event, which was held at the Accra International Centre, hosted an impressive number of music lovers from the general public, local and international music artistes, international music producers from South Africa and Nigeria and stakeholders in the music industry, which filled the auditorium to capacity

Speaking to GNA after receiving the top grand award, Obuor said he was expecting to win the top grand award, because of the high level popularity "Konkontiba" generated last year among the young and the old. He said, "it became a household song every where you pass, you hear people singing it"

Obuor said the award would spear him on to greater heights, saying, "I would continue to maintain the high level of standards that I have set for myself and move ahead for more laurels.

The New Hiplife Artiste of Year Award went to Batman for his highest public appeal and best stage performance in 2004. The Best Male Vocal Performance Award went to K. K Fosu for his best vocal delivery on any musical presentation in the year 2004. Agnes Opoku Agyeman, one of the new gospel artistes on the gospel scene took the best Female Vocal Performance, whiles contemporary High Life Song of the Year Award went to Rex Omar.

Esther Smith, one of the nation's finest gospel artistes stumped her authority in the gospel music industry in the country when she took the Gospel Song of the Year Award, Gospel Album of the Year and Best Album of the Year with her Album titled "Oyame Boafo".

Set Frempong, a.k.a Dancing Prophet, took the Gospel Artist of the Year for his best stagecraft and popularity in 2004, whiles the New Gospel Artists of the Year went to Lady Prempeh. K.K Fosu took the Contemporary Highlife Artiste of the Year. The Highlife Song of the year, went to "Aduu Sumo Akwadu" by Lucky Mensah.

The Song Writer of the Year went to Okomfo Kwadee. Lexifry Production took the Record Label of the Year with the highest number of winning artistes in the year 2004, The Recording Engineer of the Year went to Morris Babyface for being the individual directly responsible for the most winning songs for the year 2004. The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) Merit Award, which is an honorary award given to deserving musicians regarded as living legends of Ghanaian music went to C. K. Mann.

The most popular Traditional Group of the Year Award, which was voted for only by the selection and planning committee was awarded to Kusum Gboo, while Reggae Song of the Year was Awarded to Sheriff Ghale. The Best Music Video Directing Award went to Gerald Ogee Gyimah, for directing "Ye ko Mmaape" by Okomfo Kwaadee.

Africa Song of the Year-Non Ghanaian, one of the newly created awards this year went to 2 Face Idibia for his song "African Queen". Mr Asamoah Boateng, deputy Minister of Tourism and the Modernization of the Capital City, Mr Samuel Adjiri Blankson and ACP. Kofi Boakye, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander graced the event. One of Ghana finest highlife artiste Rex Omar put up a splendid live band performance that generated much excitement among the audience, as he sang, some of the guest could be heard singing along, while others who could not resist the urge got up dancing.
