New song for Bukom Banku

There has already been a lot of hype about the upcoming boxing match between Braimah ‘Bukom Banku’ Kamoko and Ayitey Powers but the release of a new single by Wuo Asenke seems to be raising tension among the boxers’ fans to new heights.

The song is titled Onyele (Undefeatable) and Bukom Banku is actually featured it. Recorded at Blaka Studios at Dansoman in Accra, the track has a jolly Azonto feel that easily makes one want to dance. Asenke, a good friend to Bukom Banku, came to attention early last year when he recorded an Azonto-infected piece called Aajei featuring Castro.

Many music lovers saw Aajei as a ‘fighting song’ due to references to ‘give you blow,’ ‘jabbing,’ ’upper cut,’ and ‘blocking.’

Onyele is very much a fun piece which can also be regarded as another ‘fighting song.’ Rendered in Ga and bits of pidgen English, it mentions Banku’s prowess as a fighter and adds: “This be undefeatable with many titles….We go go the same cycle.”

Banku is yet to taste defeat in his boxing career and though no direct reference is made to his opponent for the April 18 fight, the song is said to have angered supporters of Ayitey Powers.

Asenke made quite an impact with Aajei was heavy on percussion and tried to create humour with terms familiar to Ga speakers, especially those in the Ga Mashie area.

This new song follows a similar route but the timing of the release as the big fight approaches, makes it a sensitive piece of creative work.

The song, Asenke says, will be launched on the day the boxers weigh in for the fight. It will also be included on an album dedicated to Bukom Banku to be released soon.

There is intense love for boxing in the Ga Mashie area. It has produced some of this nation’s treasured champions and it won’t be surprising if a song that leans more towards Powers pops up before the much-publicized bout.
