Miss Africa USA finalist, Priscilla Boateng targets education and economic dev't

Priscilla Boateng, is another beautiful Ghanaian finalist in the upcoming Miss Africa USA pageant. The Virginia-based young entrepreneur and graduate student at the Virginia Commonwealth University, has chosen to work on a platform aimed at reducing poverty in Africa through education and economic development. “My micro-project is entitled Education for All. I chose this project because I believe education truly is the great equalizer of the conditions of man”, comments Priscilla.

She has already adopted the Dampaase District Assembly Kindergarten Primary Junior High School in Lagma with a goal of helping the school build a computer and science lab as well as a library. According to Priscilla, she entered the beauty contest because she is an enthusiast for African people and she believes that her education and experiences have prepared her adequately to become an Ambassador for her homeland.

Priscilla describes her journey so far as a learning curve with several opportunities to learn more about Africa. “This Pageant is one of my biggest accomplishments. The journey is difficult yet exceptionally rewarding. It has been months of hard work, practice, and prayer. It’s about more than parading in fancy gowns; it has given me the chance to do something small to make a big difference in my country.”

“I have already gained so much from this adventure; from meeting beautiful, intelligent African women to learning so much more about myself. My only wish is to serve those less fortunate and carryout my humanitarian interests.”

If she wins the coveted crown, Priscilla’s mission would be to raise awareness in both Africa and the United States about the need for education and technological advancement in the Motherland. “Many people have the misconception that sending food to Africa is going to rid the countries of poverty. Contrary to popular belief, the reduction to poverty is not handouts; but through education and creating more jobs,” she adds.

Priscilla, who says she is ashamed for not visiting Ghana in the last 10 years, hopes that would change soon and sends the following message to her fellow Ghanaians. “It has been 10 years since I last visited Ghana. However, that will change soon. I will be coming back home within the next few months. As Ghanaians, we have to come together and work together as a whole and promote education amongst both the young and old. Another project I hope to begin soon is to conduct free classes in Ghana to teach adults reading, writing, and basic mathematics. Education is indubitably the key to success; therefore it is imperative that we educate our people.”

The Miss Africa USA Pageant is the biggest and the most publicized pageant that features African Queens in the United States of America today. The Pageant was founded as a platform for young African women in the United States to showcase their culture, talent and beauty on a global stage. The Finals will take place July 23rd-25th at the University of Maryland Marriot Hotel and Conference Center in College Park, Maryland.
