"Gari foto" to go international

The grand final event of this year's Cook Art contests would take place at the National Theatre in Accra on Saturday. The contest started with preliminary events in five zones, which covered all the ten regions. The 45 finalists are expected to provide a keen contest.

In all, there five zones, namely Eastern, Central, Brong Ahafo, Upper Western and Upper East. They will contest in the Breakfast, Snack and Main Meal categories, and then go for the real ‘Gari Foto’ competition, which, according to the national coordinator of Cook Art, Mrs Bella Ahu, the contest seeks to promote.

Ahu explained that Cook Art 2002 which is the third edition of the contest aims at promoting gari foto, because the organisers want to give it an international appeal so that it could be served as fast food just as the Chinese have succeeded in putting fried rice on international menu cards.

Mrs Ahu disclosed that mouth-watering prizes comprising deep freezers, table top fridges, gas cookers and assorted items would be presented to deserving winners.

Cook Art is a collaborative cooking contest organised the Trafix Catering organised by the trafix Catering Services and the National Traditional Caterers Association aimed at improving the skills of traditional caterers and teaching them how to prepare nutritious food under hygienic conditions.

It is sponsored by Unilever, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Ministry of Health, Bosch Home Appliances and Stegab Company Limited.
