GASS holds mid-year public forum on Reconciliation

Accra, June 2, GNA - Reconciliation would be the main subject when the Ghana National Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) holds its annual mid-year public forum in Accra from June 13-15.

A statement issued by Prof. Kwesi Yankah, Honorary Secretary, said the theme for the three-day forum at the British Council Hall would be "Reconciling the Nation."

The forum is being held by GAAS in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

"Events in recent times have exposed the threatening sceptre of disunity within the Ghanaian body politic," the statement noted. "While in their own view, factions, political parties, ethnic groupings etc may feel justified in their demands for what is rightfully theirs, the fact remains that it is only in unity that the nation called Ghana can derive its full strength for posterity," it said. Topics to be discussed include "The Concept of Reconciliation", "Reconciliation: Comparative Perspectives", "Ethnicity and National Reconciliation" and "Reconciliation and National Integration: The Way Forward".

Speakers include Justice Emeritus Professor Modibo Ocran, Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Nana Otuo Siroboe II, Juabenhene and the most Rev. Charles Palmer-Buckle, Catholic Archbishop of Accra.
