Driver charged with murder of a student

Sunyani, July 7, GNA- The Sunyani Magistrate's Court on Monday granted a 20 million cedis bail with one surety to Kwame Yeboah, a 35-year-old driver for allegedly killing Master Mark Yaw Mensah, a final year engineering student of Sunyani Polytechnic. His plea was not taken and he is to reappear on July 21.

The facts of the case as presented by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Thomas Kweku Fokuoh, were that the deceased and three other students attended a dinner organized by the Engineering Students Association of the Polytechnic at the Berlin Restaurant at Fiapre, near Sunyani. He said on their way back to the school on June 22, the students saw the vehicle, driven by the accused coming from the Fiapre towards Sunyani. The deceased who was standing on the pavement in front of the Sunyani College of Renewal Natural Resources flagged the driver to stop and pick them to school but the driver ignored him, and rather knocked him down and bolted for fear of being lynched.

DSP Forkuo said efforts by the other students to take him to the hospital on time proved futile so they took the deceased in a taxi to the Sunyani Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead. DSP Fokuoh said the driver reported early in the morning at the Sunyani District Police Station and was placed in custody.
