Cleaner jailed for attempted robbery

Kumasi, July 24, GNA- Sule Mohammed, a 41-year-old cleaner at the PZ area of Adum in Central Kumasi, was on Thursday sentenced to three years' imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for attempted robbery.

Mohammed, who was convicted on his own plea, had been breaking into several stores at the PZ area and making away with a variety of items including wax prints and cosmetics.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector John Afful told the court that following persistent robberies at the PZ area, the people became very vigilant and mounted an intensive search for those behind them. What alarmed the people most, he said, was the manner in which the robberies were carried out and as a result became suspicious that it was the work of an insider.

Chief Inspector Afful said on July 21, at about 0130 hours some residents saw Mohammed breaking into one of the stores belonging to one Janet Donkor, a trader.

When they confronted him, he said, the accused engaged them in a fierce struggle in an attempt to bolt away but was overpowered and handed over to the Police Buffalo Unit. Chief Inspector Afful told the court that after thorough investigation, Mohammed admitted having broken into several stores.
