NPP Conference: Kufuor to vote by proxy

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor will not be present in Tamale for the New Patriotic Party’s delegates’ conference on Saturday, April 12.

The three-time flagbearer of the NPP will, therefore, vote by proxy.

This came to the fore on Thursday, April 10 when TV3’s Komla Klutse – who is in Tamale to specially report on the Conference – talked to the Director of Elections of NPP, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, from within the venue.

“I am aware [Former] President Kufuor’s name is in the proxy…so he may not be around,” Mr. Korsah stated.

TV3 gathers the former president, who is the only NPP leader to have been president of Ghana, is in the United States of America (USA) for crucial meetings, in his capacity as Special Envoy on Climate Change for the United Nations (UN). He is expected to engage the World Bank and chair a biennial High Level Meeting of the Sanitation and Water for All Partnership, which he chairs.

Mr. Korsah intimated that all preparatory works for the conference have been conducted. He said delegates are being accredited though the process has been completed for the media and other key stakeholders.

“It will be fantastic,” he mentioned, adding that the conference will afford the party another opportunity “to improve on all we have done before.”

He said only delegates of the Manhyia in the Ashanti Region may not be eligible to vote as there is a court order for an election rerun in that area.

The Secretary to the Vetting Committee, however, assured that if the rerun is conducted, delegates from constituencies affected will be allowed to cast their ballot.
