You walk the streets of Accra and you will find two storey buildings being used as Universities. Some of these useless institutions are charging students thousands of cedis per semester and offering courses such as hospitality and human psychology.
Now, the few Polytechnics which have been designed to produce qualified technicians-electricians, industrial mechanics, plumbers and catering officers are in rush to be upgraded to universities. Dumb idea.
So let's see... your pipe is busted and you need a plumber who will quickly throw on a work gear and get his hands dirty but rather you find a guy in tie show up and introduces himself as a plumbing engineer who refuses to grab a pipe wrench but rather calls an illiterate apprentice who knows nothing about the repairs. Not only is your cost through the roof, the work is shoddy and doesn't last.
The people in charge of education, Okudjeto and his illiterate colleagues are not fit for the job.
Let's listen to the experts like Prof. Ayeetey

HAVE ALL THE BIG GOWNS AND HOODS OF THE EDUCATED TEACHING AT THE THE PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES ACCELERATED ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA.
OPAYIN ARYEETEY IS RIGHT IN HIS ARGUMENT,YOU CANNOT TURN POLYTECHNICS TO TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES AT THE TIME THAT, POLYTECHNICS IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD ARE THE BACKBONE OF THEIR ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TURNING OUT MIDDLE LEVEL PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AS ARTISANS AND TECHNICIANS IN TURNING THE WHEELS OF INDUSTRIALIZATION, MANUFACTURING AND PROCESSING PLANTS IN THEIR VARIOUS COUNTRIES.
ITS ONLY INNOVATION,TOIL,SWEAT AND HARDWORK THAT CAN TRANSFORM THE NATION TO PROSPERITY.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT, YOUR SO CALLED EDUCATED HAVE UNDERDEVELOPED THE NATION.
ITS ALL BEEN THE HARDWORK OF THE ILLITERATZE COCOA FARMERS AND UNSKILLED MINE WORKERS WHO CONTINUE TO EARN GHANAS FOREIGN EXCHANGE TO SRRVICE NATIONAL BUDGETS AND WAGES AND SALARIES,OTHERWISE, THE NATION WOULDN'T HAVE SURVIVED WITH THE SO CALLED UNPRODUCTIVIE NOISY EDUCATED IN GHANA.
YOU CAN EVEN TURN THE MAJOR CEMETERIES IN GHANA TO TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES, AND THEY WILL NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE COUNTRY.
ARE WE NOT STILL SHAMEFUL AND DISGRACEFUL PEOPLE ON EARTH.

ARYEETEY IS INDEED JUSTIFIED IN HÍS ARGUMENT.OUR NATION HAS STILL NOT HAD THE BASE FOR VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING HENCE, OUR CONTINUED ECONOMIC BACKWARDNESS, UNDERDEVELOMEMNT AND EXTREME POVERTY.
HAS THE TURNIG OF TARKWA TECHNICAL SCHOOL,ONCE THE BACKBONE FOR GHANA'S INDUSTRIALIZATION IN THE FIFTIES THROUGH TO THE SIXTIES TO UNIVERSITY OF MINES MADE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE COUNTRY.
CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE TURNING THE TARKWA TECHNICAL SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY OF MINES IN A TOWN WHERE THERE IS STILL NO RUNNING WATER FOR ITS PEOPLE.
IT IS TIME THE SOI CALLED EDUCATED WITH BIG DEGREES AND PHD TITLES WHO CONTINUE TO UNDERDEVELOP THE NATION ARE SENT TO CULTIVATE THE VAST FERTILE LANDS AND PRODUCE FOOD FOR THE GROWING POPULATION.
AS PAA JOE SAID, IT IS TIME YOUR SO CALLED GOWNS AND HOODS ARE BURNT IN PUBLIC, BECAUSE,THEY HAVE BROUGHT NO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA.
ARYEETEY IS HUNDRED PERCENT RIGHT TO CONDEMN THE MAD ADVENTURE.
SOMETIMES ONE WONDERS, WHETHER THESE IRRATIONAL DECISIONS ARE BEING FORCED ON THE GOVERNMENT FROM OUTSIDE.
THESE ANTI ELEMENTS HAVE TO BE BLAMED FOR THE BREAK DOWN OF THE LABOUR DEPARTMENT,FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, EDUCATION AND LOCAL GOVERNMEMT IN THE COUNTRY.
ARE WE A SOUVERIGN STATE WHEN OUTSIDE ORGANISATIONS CONTINUE TO DICTATE TO US.
