It is very disappointing to hear a so called Ghanaian Journalist talking about Nuclear Energy, without any knowledge of the topic.
Where was Kwesi Pratt when this Mahama Government took useless decisions that would only help them dip deeper into State Coffers and steal money for themselves?
Let us look at one or two issues; VRA accumulated so much debt for the Gas supplied by Nigeria to fuel some of our Power Plants. Ghana went to borrow money. But instead of paying the outstanding debts, they went to lease Power Barges from Turkey, without knowing that the Barges also need some fuel to run. WE were fed with propaganda and lies, until the first of the Barges came in. GNPC went to borrow money from Deutsche Bank, and funded the fuelling of the Barge for some time. Now we hear GNPC is broke.
Knowing the Power Barges are not going to solve our power problems, The Mahama Government has decided to spend exorbitant amounts of money to buy a scrapped COAL plant from China. I know that we do not have Coal in Ghana to fuel the now worldwide (ANTIQUATED) Power plant. We are going to be fed with lies and propaganda again until the truth reveals itself, that it is SENSELESS, a HOAX, JOKE, and utter stupidity to build a desalinating plant to use sea water to run a COAL power plant.
Kwesi Pratt hasn't offered his advice to his Mahama Government yet.
Kwesi Pratt, how about erecting two Wind tubines in every district? The money needed for that Chinese-Waawu Coal Plant, and for the needed imported coal, and "SEA WATER TREATMENT" to generate that small amount of electricity, would be more than enough to supply every district of Ghana with Wind Energy

Fellow Readers,
I agree with the writer on tilting towards Nuclear for power generation. The late President Nkrumah had the foresight hence the centre at Kwabenya. Other advanced countries have nuclear to complement their generation. What we need in Ghana is to import the technology with the manning resources if maintenance and trust will be an issue. One nuclear plant capacity dependent can eliminate the current crisis. Despite the Fukushima disaster, Japan is still with Nuclear even though it's dangerous, the benefits outweigh. I support nuclear.

Younger Nations like South Korea and Singapore kann all depend on themselves, manufacture and build their own things. Ghana still imports second hand Bicycles, and elsewhere discarded car tyres. Putting up a building is even a problem; uncompleted buildings are tumbling down and killing people. We are not capable of building even GUTTERS!
Of course we have PhD Degree holders. Dr. Afari Gyan registering Akua Donkor to contest to be PRESIDENT of Ghana.

The joke is on you. You mention that a country like South Korea as a success story, yet you fail to state that the USA was the chief achitect of South Korea's economic success in its cold war battle with North Korea. South Korea also has had huge help from the Janese in the building and growth of its manufacturing sector. While the USA was busy derailing Ghana's road to success by working with the Busia/Danquah folks to stage a coup in Ghana in 1966, with Afrifa as the inside person for the Busia/Danquah group, the same USA was busy helping in the building and growtrh of South Korea's economic infrastructure by pouring billions of dollars annually into the Korean economy. The stationing of thousands of US troops in South Korea all these years have served immensely to pour military spending into the South Korean economy. We can't base Ghana's future development by comparing it to Korea, for hat comparison does not fit.

Let's face facts, Erik. Ghanaians couldn't construct even a road from Achimota to Ofankor. Chinese had to come in and rescue us. And the CONTRIBUTION of our Minister towards that project was to Demand a LUXURY BMW CAR from the Chinese, if that Chinese company wanted to be given the contract.
When the car came, even the President (late Atta-Mills) became jealous, and refused to allow that Gidisu Guy to ride in a more sofisticated vehicle than the President of the Country.

It simply beggars belief that anyone with a modicum of intelligence could even begin to imagine that the Nation is remotely capable of being entrusted with the safe custodianship of such a facility [never mind being able to find the dosh to set it up in the first place].
Prince Willy, notwithstanding his acclaimed specialisation as the country’s number one purveyor of ‘dodgy jokes’, speaks volumes of common sense in his brief comment above.

Pratt has been talking a lot of nonsense but finally he has said something with sense. Thermal power generation is one of the most expensive way to generate power. So we as the citizens of this country are ready to pay the astronomical prices or we need to switch immediately to nuclear power. We could still integrate some wind parks offshore but this will not be sufficient. In fact if we had a three reactor nuclear power plant (each reactor producing 1000MG), plus the anticipated coal power plant from VRA, plus some windpack, then we would come easily to the 5000MG Government was looking for.
Akosomobo- and Bui-Dam could be shut down completely to refill the whole reservoir and be kept as a standby or be put on only on sight production so that the equipment will not spoil. That way we could finally start our so much anticipated industrial area otherwise we will never attract large corporations like South Africa did in the past. We need to take this step to develop our nation. All other "first" world nations went to this transition so there is not shortcut for Ghana even do we like taken shortcuts like no other nations. So stop playing our stupid and deadly politic game and lay down some serious visions and plans for the future of our country. We need people in government with vision not with nightmares. NPP and NDC is to blame for the whole situation since they have ruled Ghana the last years. I doubt that CPP, PPP or whatever party would have done better but we need to stop our political casserole theater and get things straight and right now or never. Thanks you!

I can see that most people just comment on anything they can get hold of. They should do some research before opening their mouth. There is a detailed plan already laid out how to run the plant and which country will handle the waist. The Atomic Energy Commission has been working on this for quite a long time and there are several gentleman and technocrats who have the capacity to run such a facility. If the Government would just stay out of it, it would be done well and sufficient.
The problem we have is that every government is trying to put their own people in each government institution and that is whats tripling us. They doing give the job to the one who could do it best. Can you see now how god your parties have served us all this time. Selfishness and stupidity has held us back.

This is a Speech and Endorsement in Season. When we talk nuclear, we talk cheap, available and clean source of energy that is abundant in comparatively small amount of fuel than required by other sources.
If typically, the energy produced from fuel made from one tonne of natural uranium is equivalent to the burning of over 20,000 tonnes of coal or 8.5 million cubic metres of gas then one cannot ignore this endorsement but rather be aligned to this speech in season. If Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah could think of nuclear energy even at the time that the technology was not as advanced as today, we Ghanaians don't have much justification at this time not to go nuclear in our times. It is the only option left for us to advance and make the next step in our quest for energy sufficiency. Mr. Pratt is just on point and this point is vital not only now but even earlier than now, say, 20 years after the first power flowed from Akossombo in September 1965. We are even dragging our feet too much. We should have gotten this idea on board much much earlier and definitely we would not have been in our present energy situation. Mr. Pratt Statement is not a cheap talk, it is not a joke but it a clear and present reality. My good guess is that, the opposition that was present in those times may not be different from today because it is the path for all great ideas and visions. But the good people of Ghana will always come to term with it and work it through.Dont forget good people that, the operation of nuclear facilities are always done under rigorous regulatory controls. The standards employed are as high as or even if not more than those in the aviation industry. I want to join Mr. Pratt to call on all to embrace this idea or take time to think about it twice. It is possible in Ghana and the Ghanaian can do it and even better. Cheers!

Energy is life and undoubtedly a vital component in the value-chain of production. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his CPP Government laid a foundation to develop both the institutional and technological development of nuclear power as a source of electricity to COMPLEMENT the hydro-power from Akosombo.
This was not just a fanciful dream but a correct understanding and anticipation of growth in the demand for energy even as our motherland grows in population and industrial activity.
Exploring alternative sources of energy was essential for our country and we cannot at this time be taking the small steps because they end up being more expensive.
