Below is the mineral production in 1967:
Gold (from Ashanti and Western Regions) --- 724,134 oz
Diamond (from the Akyem in the Eastern Region) --- 2,633,527 ct
Bauxite (from the Western Region) --- 333,458 mt
Manganese (from the Western Region) --- 596,572 mt
(Source mining policy of Ghana)
Value today:
Gold --- $1400 per oz
Diamond --- from $1500 to $150,000 per carat (Market price)
Bauxite --- $150 per mt
Manganese --- $450 per tonne
Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years.

Illegal mining has become a big headache in Ghana today because both NDC and NPP governments have done nothing but pay lip-service to the problem. If the government wants to, it can stop illegal mining by taking serious action against all persons responsible for it. How does a government claim to serious about illegal mining when Chinese illegal immigrants engaged in illegal mining are simply shipped back to China when apprehended by the police? Are many Ghanaian politicians, business persons, and chiefs not sponsors of illegal mining in Ghana? Lack of serious action by this government and past governments has led to the escalation in illegal mining, causing not only loss of revenue to the government, but also the more serious problem of environment polution within the lands and waters in the ares that are illegally mined.

United State sanctions, on Russia coordinated with European Union what the West sees, as Moscow's recent effort to destabilize eastern Ukraine will have serious impact on poor countries like Ghana.
The sanctions targeted major Russian companies including Banks, oil giants and energy companies to conduct deepwater offshore and shale projects. The oil and energy companies affected are Gazprom, Gazprom Neft, Lukoil, Surgutneftegas and Rosneft. This latest sanctions are designed to limit Russia’s conventional oil production but to hit future production by depriving Russian firms of the expertise of companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp and BP Plc. This new move will shut down Deepwater oil exploration and production activity as sanction is depriving these Russian companies of the goods, services and technologies required to do the work.
This new sanction will halt financing of existing Russian projects in Ghana, so what is Ghanaian Government doing or can do to ensure the new cold war does not affect their struggling economy? Ghana sees itself as non-aligned and as we are watching the events from Europe and across Atlantic, the new birth of cold war is eminent even though western politicians have brushed it off. Every country in world has a foreign policy, which is designed buttress their national interest and would move swiftly should anything hamper those interests.
