I like the concluding statement 'Government functionaries are in A state of denial and are descending heavily and crudely on people who echo the general sentiments of Ghanaians. This may be understandable given that such functionaries live on state resources and they do not have to worry about soaring prices. But the truth of the matter is that the rest of Ghanaians are facing severe social and economic hardships. And it is important that Government and its functionaries wake up to the realities and do something about the plight of Ghanaians”' Well said sir. The Government has no clue in managing the foreign exchange crisis. Its responses will further exacerbate the situation. They should do away with the control mentality and address the root causes of the depreciation of the cedi. We need forward-looking liberal policies which would encourage domestic and foreign direct investment and provide a boost to the economy. We are a consumption economy and it is catching up with us. To start with, people should be allowed to have foreign exchange accounts. No one would save in dollars or any other foreign exchange exchange if he or she can only get cedis when they want to withdraw their money. Foreign investors would stay away when there are no guarantees of being able to repatriate their profits in a currency of their choice. The Government needs to drastically reduce its spending. For a small economy, Ghana debt ratio is a bit high. More prudent management of the economy will solve this crisis and bring back confidence in the economy. Making threats of imprisonment etc will not solve the problem.

The currency of a country is really nothing more than printed paper backed by the assets of the country. If you print more of the paper, and you do not produce more of the assets to back it up, you end up diluting the relative value of the paper (currency). In a simplistic way, the only way to shore up the value of the currency is to produce more assets to back the currency.
With this simple fact in mind, the measures taken by the Bank of Ghana tells me the people in charge of the economy just do not understand the cause of the problem, and have no clue as to the proper solution to the problem. The fact that people want to conduct their transactions in dollars and avoid the cedi is an indication of the lack of confidence in the value of the currency ie this is a symptom of the problem, and not really the problem. Restricting the conversion of cedis to dollars and dollars to cedis will just create a black market for the dollar-cedi conversion rate just as we had in the 1980's and 1990's. In the final analysis the black market rate will reflect the true value of the cedi relative to the dollar.
I cry for my country. We really have a buch of morons in charge of the affairs of the state who have no idea as to what is going on..

The simple answer to this question lies in the financial policies of the United States.
Ghana is not the only country caught up in this unfortunate predicament. Let's take a look at the currencies of the emerging economies of India, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, etc.
The United States is contemplating a scaling back of its policy of monthly $85 billion bond buying program, -- known as Quantitative Easing.
This would have the adverse effect of causing interest rates in the United States,-- that have hitherto been kept artificially low -- to rise.
A rise in U.S. interests has the potential of making U.S. securities more attractive, and the U.S. the ultimate destination for foreign investments. Hence the appreciation of the value of the U.S. dollar against the currencies of emerging economies.
Question II:
Where did our government go wrong, relative to the times of global easy money?
Ghana like most of the emerging economies took its eyes off the ball, and unlike the proverbial ant failed to gather food in the sunny days of global easy money.
Our government failed to even put money aside to prop up our currency in time of emergency.
We failed to invest in our local industries.
We failed to take advantage of the global easy money to overhaul our tax system, and to broaden our tax base.
The failure-list of our government to safeguard our country's economy goes on, and on.
Talking of cracking down on the dollarization of the economy, the question here is:
What took our government so long?
I think it's too late to crackdown without causing the emergence of an underground economy, that would undermine the real economic policies of the country.
On the one hand, it, is a mixed blessing at the expense of the poor masses, on the other hand it is necessary to discourage it to ensure the legitimacy of our economy.
I urge the government to proceed gingerly to bring it under control.
With all due respect, I urge our president to wake up from his slumber for the sake of the poor.

The alleged corruption by those in charge of projects meant less people employed, less money in the system.
Those millions of dollars wasted could have gone into roads, help farmers and so many other issues confronting the nation. Obviously, our dependence on foreign goods and therefore need for foreign exchange has also contributed to our present economic situation which directly affects the cedi.
what happened before the elections is now brought forward into the economy and now the government has to find new
money to fund projects which have already been paid for but nothing to show for.

I live in Canada here , and most of our foods are produced here in Canada except tropical foods. Here the Canadian Dollar has fallen below 90 cents against the US Dollar. Pen and pencils used in the schools, toilet paper to wipe your ass when you go, even second-hand clothing are all imported from abroad. Ghana is a country that consumes without producing. That is the problem.
But you dont have to produce everything you need in your country. The trick is to produce what you are good at, and very capable of producing, then use the money from what you produce to trade with other countries. The more you produce, the more money you have, and the more you can buy from other countries. It is that simple.
A Dutch politician once told his countrymen: "We are not born to industrial magnificence; sticking to the land will serve us best". What he was suggesting was for the Dutch to focus on and specialise in agricultural products, and then use the money from selling the agricultural products to buy cars from Germany, planes from England, clothing from France etc etc.
There was a time, not very long ago, when Ghana was the leading world producer of Cocoa, and the second leading world producer of coffee.
Imagine all the extra dollars we will earn if we focused our attention and specialised in producing cocoa and coffee for the world? We were once
called the "Gold Cost" because we have gold galore hidden beneath our feet. The gold is still there. Imagine how much dollars we can earn as a country if we focused and specialised in mining our own gold instead of selling our most productive gold mines to foreigners and leavinfg the exploration of gold to Chinese galamsey operators? We have fertile agricultural lands, yet we import rice. The problem of Ghana is one of good leadership. Leadership that wil organise the resources of the country, harness our potentials as humans and stop running around the globe asking for handouts from the whites and Chinese.
I was very young when Kwame Nkrumah was around, but I still miss him. He was the real deal; a great visionary leader. So far as we have clueless, selfish morons without any vision leading us, we will not get anywhere.

It seems in Africa, anybody who is working wants to get more than the person who employed him or her no matter how much the investor earns as a profit.
