You are so right. When you are there they use you to travel - invitation letter, plane tickets, buy this - buy that, pay this for me with a credit card, etc..... then you land in Ghana. They receive you well at the airport. Ghanaians are BIG on first impressions. But when your host and family start eating in their bedrooms or claim they don't eat lunch, makes you wonder why they never refused lunch every time they visited you.
Then the lies.....hmmmmmm. Some of them lie so much. In fact we lie now more than we used to. No or Yes is not in their vocabulary. They say yes and then when it's time to deliver they stop answering your calls. When you run into them they blame the "network".
When they "help" you, they leave you feeling you owe them and they have subtle ways doing this - casual workers, civil servants, business people, pastors, policemen, etc.
A friend who told me his ordeal lasting 3 years in Ghana left the country last night.

Does anybody even have to remind our leaders in Ghana, that there are many Ghanaians with a tall list of academic credentials, professional and practical experiences that they can bring down to Ghana to help with our Technological and Economic development. But, alas, WHY NOT IS IT HAPPENING??? *Read on:
1) Because of gargantuan STUPIDITY, JEALOUSY and ENVY of Diasporas by our foolish leaders and a large section of the populace. We in Africa, not the Europeans, Americans, Canadians, Japanese and even the Chinese need any touch-up development, but the Negro Africans. So, what are we waiting for?
2) The same foolish leadership has no PROGRAM to first bring these people down to Ghana, no program to ASSIST them with logistics to FIT IN and do any good business. Some medical doctors from the United States returned to Ghana to be “re-engaged”, but they were frustrated for almost a year of their paperwork not going anywhere. Downright 18th century RED-TAPE and sheer laziness in that Mickey Flick (Ghana).
3) The stupid leaders don't even know where the critical services are needed to lure diaspora expertise to come to help in those areas. Embassies should be empowered to RECRUIT talented Ghanaian Diasporas.
4) They (political leaders and other government officials) have no appetite to bring down Ghanaian Diasporas because they're afraid of COMPETITION from them—all wrapped up in "skin-pain, envy and bloody jealousy."
5) Do they even have "voting rights" for the Diasporas? The answer is Hell No, because they seem not to WANT or NEED US to participate in the affairs of Ghana, although some of them also lived abroad.
But, smart countries like Rwanda, Israel, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and many others have very comprehensive programs to BRING BACK HOME some of their willing Diasporas to help with their respective economic and technological developments. They countries belong to all of us!!
$$ SEE, all they want from us is our MONEY ($$) for their village political campaigns and nothing else $$. So, many of us have vowed or sworn to return ONLY UPON our retirement—when we don't need them (government officials) to do anything for us and just relax and enjoy the fruits of our hard work abroad, FOOLS!!

This reporter has reported a serious issue but the medium or language used is horrible, to say the least and smacks of half-baked education. The issue of Diasporeans coming home to roost and help Ghana is cardinal but the problem is that there are those at home who do not want them because of their crass obduracy and short-sightedness, and selfish motives. We should one day elect a Disporean President to change the Ghanaian mindset as Nkrumah tried to do.

Mr Charles Augustus sam's comment is very wise and honest. Let us all give it the attention it deserves. However it must be noted that 95% of Ghanaians in the diaspora think well of their mother country Ghana yet apprehensive of the so called successful home-established compatriots. The simple lives enjoyed by Ghanians in the diaspora is in contrast with the superflous lives of the resident Ghanaian. Unless success is regarded in terms of what the mind can offer and not mainly on what the financially wealthy can do, the call will remain an empty shout. Together, the coastlines of Ghana will be loking like Durban, San Francisco or Lobito. Individually, we have the East Legon, Cantonments, Airport residential areas. Individually, houses are super. Collectively, roads and pipelines and sewage and waste disposal are in shambles. The government officials meet other foreign political counterparts in exaggerated environments. In their own constituencies, their houses stand out and others live like other class citizens. Several expertise in the Diaspora exists. Some are prepared to arrive, wear shorts, drive tractors and provide advice. But what names shall they acquire? - a failed sojourner, because he wants to drive a modest car, live in a one storey 3 bedroom house instead of a mansion and devote rest of his resources and mind to solution of Ghana's problems.? Sam, thanks for your call but much rests on public and private resident leaders and the mindset of the entire Ghanaian population. I am prepared to teach mthematics, science and Geography in any school no matter where it is located in the country. I need a simple car, house and plot to grow my vegetables. I have 5 kids all of whom are academic professionals(a mechanical engineer, a medical officer, an accountant, a lawyer and a quantity surveyor; and we have instilled the spirit of sacrifice and selflessness in ourselves. We shall be available to come home and support the country if the community that we wish to serve also cherish same values of tolerance, humility, patriotism, compassion and selflessness. I am a university lecturer but wish toimpart my experience and expertise to the secondary or high school student(s)

What about Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Akoto Osei and many others that I can't mention here who have all come home leaving their lucrative jobs and businesses abroad to come home and help build Ghana only for NDC to use wicked strategy and dubious tactics to thwart their efforts. This is nothing new. The prevailing corrupt conditions will not allow many of our talents abroad to come home and help. What about those who have returned to their foreign bases or homes after making it a try by attempting to re-settle back home by investing or establishing businesses? Many Ghanaians have been disappointed by the mismanagement, horrible economic conditions, corruption and ted-tapes in the system. Don't get excited by making such suggestions; there are numerous Ghanaians who have tried to get started and connected in the country but realized it's all bogus, especially under the current NDC "buga-buga" gov't. MEANWHILE, OTHERE-DARKO HAS SET UP A "CONSULTANCY" WAITING IN THE WINGS TO SYPHON GHANA'S MONEY OUT JUST IN CASE UNCLE AKUFFO-ADDO WINS THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE IN 2016.
MOST OF THE MONIES NPP STOLE UNDER KUFUOR HAS STRATEGICALLY BEEN SQUEEZED OUT OF THEM BY "SMART" MAHAMA'S GOVERNMENT, SO THEY ARE ALMOST BROKE, HENCE THE DESPERATION TO COME BACK TO POWER TO REPLENISH THEIR STOLEN CASH STOCK IN ORDER TO SOLIDIFY AND PERPETUATE THEIR HOLD ON POLITICAL POWER IN GHANA.

ALL OF THEM HAVE NO DIRECTION AND PURPOSE FOR MOTHER GHANA!!
GHANAIANS JUST HAVE TO CONTEND WITH THE PAINFUL FACT THAT WE CAN NEVER EVER GET A SELFLESS LEADER LIKE NKRUMAH AGAIN.
AS FOR "POOR OLD" BAWUMAIH, I JUST PITY HIM FOR LEAVING A US DOLLAR SALARIED JOB TO GO INTO GHANA POLITICS, WHICH HAS BY NOW EMPTIED HIS BANK BALANCE BY AT LEAST 50%.

A nations success is indeed measured by it's Human Resources. The rich HR Ghana has abroad are disgusted right at the arrival Hall of the bloody Kotoka International Airport. The bribes and lack of transparency at the harbours. The corruption at the Standards Board and the FDA. The list is countless. The 65% mix of semi educated and uneducated Ghanaians will always vote incompetent leaders to add salt to their wounds. Who wants to do Politics with the incompetent thief who is ready to spiritually kill while he wants power? The poor will continue to suffer unless they change their mind-set and that is almost impossible. The politicians know for sure that they are riding on the 65% mix. Ghana has a long way to go.

I think the problem that we have in the country is that majority of our politicians know they are not accountable to the people so they can do whatever that they want. How should the constitution allow the regional ministers and district executives be appoint or call for some members of the parliament be appointed as ministers in the executive branch. There should be separation of powers so that there can be effective checks and balances. until the constitution is changed, we will continue to have corrupt officials in every sector of our economy. This is one of the reason we have so much issues in the country because no one is being held accountable. It is about time for people to go to jail for mismanagement of official duty that resulted in losses to the country. God bless Ghana.

Thank you very much for this Article.I completed my Bsc at the University of Ghana in 2009. I was posted to (Export Development and investment Fund) EDIF Ghana in Accra. The look that greeted me was that of xenophobic South African. My duty was to work in the North on a Mango project and report to Accra every month. I was entitled to some things ordinary Services personnel's don't get because of the nature of the job. As a young guy from University of Ghana this old corrupt men can not stand the sight of a 21 year old using a government car and having a place to sleep while doing his job.The Board Chairman, told me he can not let me do my service with them because they wanted some one from who can speak the Northern Language. I knew something was up because first, most of the researches, scientist etc who were working with the local farmers dont speak the language. I will understand i was to teach farmers on crops , land where i have to speak the language. My job was More or Monitoring and Evaluation and has nothing to do with language. Even the chairman don't speak the language lol. Guess what, a few days later the Chairman was on tv full of lies about the project. They got a few northerners who dont know much about the project on file as service personnel and they were writing reports in the offices in Accra without going up there and channeling the Money that was supposed to be paid to the service personnel (me had i been allowed to work). I cursed the corrupt chairman to be honest and God brought this thief light. They were sacked for misappropriation of funds. They were not taken to court etc. These guys involved should have been in jail by now are they ? no!!What are we telling the younger generation you can steal and get away with it.My next service journey took me to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture a project called RSSP.Similar thing happened, i worked extra hours that was to be compensated with 100 Euros a month. i did my time sheet etc and was signed by the Directors i waited for my money and am still waiting. When i checked from the headquarters of the project in Ghana i was told they had some of my time sheet but they realized some one else was being paid for the work i was doing. Out of frustration i was ready to leave the country which i did. I went to visit two years ago and nothing changed bosses wanting to sleep with young ladies for jobs, guys paying for monies and never got jobs being promised them even our passport office how shameful. The sad part is when you get to the immigration in Ghana and the immigration officers are asking you for money. My point is how many diasporians will be ready to take this frustrations after spending time in a place where the system works. Have you ever tried registering a bussiness or get a building permit in Ghana, i would like to hear your story

Ghanaian leaders should take a leaf out of the books of Japan after the destruction caused by the 2nd world war. How they got the diaspora to return home to build the infrastructure, Nissan, Toyota, etc and a leader in electronics.
THIS WAS DONE THROUGH INCENTIVES AND MOTIVATION OF NATION BUILDING AND NATIONALISM.
Who in the diaspora is going to pack up and leave his lifestyle abroad to come home and have his personal belongings stolen at the ports through deliberate punitive port and custom duties (unless he bribes custom officers) while the government in power has turned government into a looting brigade stealing the nations resources? Forget about the diaspora. they are not coming to do fuckall. You respect the rights of foreigners more than you respect your own people whether at home or in diaspora.

Sometimes I wonder what sort of Humans we are in Ghana! We have been crying for a CHANGE of this 1992...EXECUTIVE DICTATORIAL CONSSTITUTION!! Till today, NOBODY has the gut to spearhead the MOVE to CHANGE the parts of the constitution WHICH HINDER OUR DEVELOPMENT....eg. diaspora ghanaians being EXCLUDED from many DECISION MAKING POSITIONS!!
We are crying wolf but it shows our general COWARDICE and ELITIST THINKING still prevailing in Ghana!!!!
A LAZY and STUPID GOOD-FOR-NOTHING -PARLIAMENT squandering the meager resources and DOING NOTHING worthwhile!!
Black folks, we are our OWN BEST ENEMIES....Greed, jealousy and back-bitting and kickbacks are ORDER of the day!!!!!!

We the people in dispora cannot come and help in any way because the leaders there who claim to have all the so called "BIG DEGREES" will not step aside to give people like me the chance to bring back the knowledge and the expereince we have acquired back to Ghana and implement them. They will find ways to either kill or make your life hell and at the long run cause us to leave. I am a demand and statistical planner and have contributed in so many areas in supply chain, from demand, production and supply planning and also have strong IT background. I am hailed by my company in the US as one of the best they ever had but l know l will not get a little respect trying to come to Ghana and assist. Folks are out the blowing the country's monies and l have friends asking me to bring my experience back home to help and the sad part is that they are not willing to pay the right people the right salary to come back. I will love to come back but l have kids here in the US that l need to take care of on their schooling and cannot afford to come to Ghana and be paid less(Cheap). If that happens then l cannot take care of my family in the US. Ghana should try and look into trying to pay disporas decent salaries to lure them back to the country for their services and l am sure they could afford to do so if the corrupt leaders will stop their corruption and pump the monies into hiring experienced disporas and pay them right.

It is not about the 'coming back' but about the reception back home. Most homesters are intimidated by the diasporans and they show it vehemently.

I advise no expert to leave and come to Ghana. Once in Ghana, the system will frustrate you as you need to be a member of a party in power. That's how the politicians are building the nation. There are more than necessary experts in this country but not members of ruling parties and as such not recognized.

Go visit Rwanda right now and see how they are progressing. This is a country that has gone through some serious war.
Ghanaians back home do not want anything to do with us, apart from the money transfers they look forward to every week. They are jealous of Diasporas hence unwilling to entertain use in the system back home.
