I suggest that you visit Korle-Bu, our so-called premier hospital to see the condition of our sick. Many Ghanaian doctors, nurses, technicians sit around and do NOTHING but are first on line to collect their pay cheques.
On top of this, a recent article states that Korle-Bu doctors are seeking free hospital care to be COMFORTABLE. Go figure.
In every situation, please LOOK, PONDER, then ACT.

If there is any truth in your view about using us for experiment, can we ask ourselves how are they able to do so when they do not even understand our language? Who are the 'links' within our community allowing them to 'experiment? That is where we should direct our anger to, not genuine volunteers. I am a ghanaian work in the health sector in U.K, and offered to volunteer my time to work at Komfo Anokye, and I was asked to pay for the 'privelege'. tweaa.

I understand how you feel but believe me what these foreigners come to do is very little compared to what Ghanaian doctors and nurses do when they go on outreai to very remote areas. On-the-spot surgeries are even carried out. Yet the media never mentions these. Only 2 nurses come to work in a city hospital and it's making news on GhanaWeb. In medicine, you can't know more about diseases in a particular region than those who see and treat the cases everyday. So these nurses will just be under the supervision of Ghanaian nurses. I bet they're just here to learn a bit of tropical nursing but are too proud to admit that and so they claim they're here for an outreach.

I am an African American, Chicago man (1952) and I have been helping across Africa, out of my own pockets monthly for over 40 years in places such as Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and more. Every month, no less than 40% of my income goes out to Africa and her children in various countries...directly. No NGOs or other organizations involved.
I get no awards, global acknowledgement, media interviews...nothing!
I am the man whom can teach GH-Americans how to create a $10,000 per week USA income in less than 1 year...no problem (I know more than one business mode that can do such). With no start-up capital involved. To then send such folks back to Ghana to really help their home country long-term. The problem is, like Blacks across the globe, Africans mindsets are too CLOSED to recognized opportunities and act on them. For such a reason, I especially appreciate WHITE WOMEN! It is they whom show and act on concerns centered around Black people in Africa, the lions, chimps, gorillas, rhinos, etc., etc., etc. They are 'Living Mother Nature'.
Black people...respect others...even when we can't respect ourselves.

If you come as an individual, how can anyone verify anything about you? I think if it is organized as an institutional programme, it easier to confirm people's status and all that. Maybe your hospital abroad should have given you a letter of intro to the local hospital you wanted to work with. my thoughts.

I had a discussion with the authorities before going, and as part of it, had a workshop for students and did some donations of reference literature to the students. They had my references to my work in U.K. In short, they knew who I was as a professional, and it was at NO COST to the hospital. I spent my holidays fully relaxed in kumasi, so it did not affect me in any way. All that I am saying is that lot of Ghanaians abroad will love to share our experiences/knowledge FREE at our cost during our holidays, but the atmosphere is not conducive. Now why will I go through the hassle of reporting this to someone, and what do I achieve with that and what a I reporting? You want to volunteer and the hospital says no unless you pay for the volunteering, what will you do?You go back to your house and enjoy the breeze till you back at work . You Hope I have clarified things for you.

Thank for clarifying things.... that sad.....the facilities really need extra hands and especially free ones at that....You should see people lying on benches for hours waiting for a nurse to give 1st AID....
