    "...survived by his wife of 31 years" means they were married for 31 years. What needs clarification is the statement that follows, "the former Ms. Juanita Byrd". Who is Ms. Juanita Byrd? Why the former?

    Your grasp of the English language is limited. The author was referring to her maiden name. Juanita Byrd got married and became Juanita Otieku. What is there not to understand?
