Ghanaian cuisine goes mainstream in the UK

Ghanaian cuisine used to be confined to the West African enclaves of London but a growing awareness of the potential popularity of Ghanaian dishes is inspiring Afropolitan gastronomes to bring Ghanaian food to the masses in the capital city and beyond.

The African Caribbean Centre in Glasgow will open its African cafe to the public in a few months' time - the first of its kind in Scotland. The centre was set up in 2005 to cater for the African Caribbean community and to promote African culture to the wider community in Glasgow.

At London's African Centre in Covent Garden in the West of the city, Jollof Pot has just finished its stint as a pop-up Ghanaian food joint.

Jollof Pot is run by Ghanaian Londoners who started selling their brand of globally-appealing Ghanaian cuisine at Broadway Market, Exmouth Market and Portobllo Road in London.

Jollof Pot grew out of Spinach & Agushi, a hugely successfully market stall venture in London where queues of hungry office workers would stand patiently in line each lunch time for their delicious dishes.

They are still feeding famished Londoners at Broadway Market, Exmouth Market and Portobello Road Market.

Waakye Leaf

Waakye Leaf catering company is run by a London lawyer with a big passion for Ghanaian food. The company will soon take over Jollof Pot's pop-up African cafe at the African Centre in London's Covent Garden. Kwame Bakoji-Hume has been commissioned to paint the walls the centre in anticipation of Waakye Leaf's gastronomic arrival.

Zoe's Ghanaian Kitchen

Following the fashion for pop-up cuisine, Zoe's Ghanaian Kitchen is one of the newest kids on the block bringing delicious Ghanaian food, tapas-style, to venues across London. Refreshingly chic, Zoe's Ghanaian Kitchen is taking Ghanaian food to a higher, more accessible level.

Zoe's Ghanaian Kitchen is currently at the Carlton Cafe in East London.
