I presume, the water used at Akosombo is again used at Kpong, both for generation of power from the same river source. This is not a complicate issue because of the river flow pattern. But when a system is to redirect used water from Akosombo which falls from a height of fifty meters downhill, it seems a very difficult proposition. Especially, to lay people like myself. Long ago, a friend who has an engineering background told me it will require about three times the units of energy to pump back used water into the dam, to produce a unit of energy to be generated.

Bra Teye, In the rainy season alone, excess water is runoff and wasted to save the dam from collapsing. You do not need to worry about not getting enough water downstream, because all that will be taken care of by the use of computers. We are in an age that can propel humans to the moon and back, why would it be that difficult to use this excess water to do multiple things at the same time. This is 2017. Think again.

Thank you Anokye. If one goes back to the comments on this subject, I have said this several times, but no one seems to take notice. I hope someone is listening this time around. Just collect the so-called used water, put it in reservoirs, and just make up the water deficiency in the lake in times of drought. These days, with the help of advanced technology, it should be no problem at all. All that is needed is the money....Long live Ghana.

People living in the area also use the resources of the river and its ecosystem for their livelihood etc. There should be a proper study in addition to the engineering study before the recycling. Some useful work is already available; e.g. work led by December Graft Johnson (formerly of CSIR) and Prof Ameka (UG). Recycling is a good idea but let's do a proper study.

Absolute lunacy. This guy does not know anything about engineering. You will need more power than akosombo produces to recycle the water coming through the turbines. It is not practicable and it isn't done anywhere on earth.

Hydro-power generation is achieved by the columns of water descending several hundreds or thousands of meters. If you want to bring the water back into the dam then you will have to pump against gravity and bearing in mind that one litre of water weighs one kilogram, it would require a lot of energy almost equal to what was generated in the first place.

It is not possible to recycle water from the Akosombo Dam. This is because, the electricity needed to pump water back into the dam would in practice exceed the electricity being generated by the dam. Moreover, the volume of water which goes through the turbines in a minute would fill up the volume of Villagio. Now some of you may say "but it is being done in other countries, why cant we do the same in Ghana ?" What is being done in other countries is a little different. In countries where they have excess electricity supply, they use the excess electricity to pump water back into small reservoirs during the daytime and then run the hydro power stations during peak power periods in the evening. However this is very controversial because the net energy loss is more !. A good understanding of SHS physics of the relationship between pressure, height and energy is enough to understand this. I can say emphatically that what Mr. Anokye is saying is not possible. He may be a successful entrepreneur but his ideas about solving Akosombos problem are flawed. He lacks a basic understanding of how a hydroelectric power station works. Give the people who have been tasked to run these institutions the benefit of the doubt. Radio stations in Ghana are allowing far too many people to air their views in the capacity of experts and they are misleading the public because their arguments tend to make sense if you don't know the actual science behind it.
