This in a way is to correct the damage JA Kufuor and his corrupt NPP did to our country. Have you ever asked why JA Kufuor and his NPP sold off two of Ghana's marquee companies without any attempt to save them? JA Kufuor sold Ashanti Goldfields Ltd in 2003 to Anglogold, a British gold company domiciled in South Africa for a mere $1.4 billion. The only marquee (prestigious) African company that was listed in both New York and London stock Exchanges were just sold off in a blink of an eye by JA Kufuor and he went on to have a lavish party at Buckingham Palace with the Queen. His accomplice, Sam Jonah was also Knighted for this perfidious act. Go and research on how governments in the past have worked very hard to save Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. during hard times.
In 1966 when Ashanti Goldfields Ltd was nearly bankrupt, General Ankrah and his NLC junta combed the world to find investors to bail out the company. These were soldiers who knew nothing about business, yet they realize that Ashanti was too valuable to allow it to sink. Fast forward to 1983 when Ashanti was again down on its knees and ready to go under, Rawlings and his PNDC junta, again soldiers, went to the IMF and borrowed $114 million to bailout Ashanti. Rawlings re-organized this marquee Ghanaian company and for the first time made a Ghanaian, Sam Jonah, the CEO of the company. Since that time Ashanti has always been the main source of Ghana's foreign exchange -it sells the gold and bring the money back home, not to England as it is now.
In 2003 Ashanti was in a financial crunch again through this stupid hedging venture by its management. The company was down but not out. So my question to you is: why did Kufuor and his NPP government not follow the examples of JA Ankrah and the NLC or JJ Rawlings and PNDC and bailout Ashanti Goldfields Ltd.? This company was Ghana's pride, in fact a hairloom. Instead, the corrupt JA Kufuor did not care a whiff about the country and went ahead and sold this valuable asset for a mere $1.4 billion - a company that was estimated at $3.5 billion by Goldman Sach.
Is it not the same Kufuor who sold off Ghana Airways? What attempt did JA Kufuor and his NPP government make to rescue Ghana Airways? Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. and Ghana Airways were national treasures - something that made every Ghanaian proud, but through the corrupt JA Kufuor, they all slipped through our fingers. It is a fantastic idea that this government, as hopeless and useless as it is, is trying to resuscitate Ghana Airways. We need our own airlines.
I hope this government or subsequent governments would attempt to buy back Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. What JA Kufuor did is just unbelievable - what a nation wrecker? After giving Anglogold a tax holiday for 5 years, JA Kufuor and his NPP government also leased the rich Ghana gold lands, like Obuasi and Prestea mines Anglogold for 55 years. There will be no gold left after 55 years. Look for the agreement for the sale of Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. on the web and read it for yourself, and if you do not weep then there is something wrong with your perspective. How can I person do so much damage to a country of his birth, yet there people in the country who don't see anything wrong with him.

You make good points! Buy back is a good thing. The selling of Ghana airways was perhaps a good thing, but was misplayed with corruption taking center stage. We need a strategic partner to start all over, this will not be a sale, but rather starting over. My caution is therefore to avoid any African airline or airways. Ethiopia has done well, so has Kenya (which brought KLM in). These hard decisions need to be made, but what happens almost all the time is the folks in leadership in Ghana like to listen to the parties singing and sweet talking, more than the hardliners. We need folks like those running Emirates who can tell you straight when we're being stupid to be at the parties we bring on-board in running a new airline.
All the politicians in Ghana have hurt us badly. From NPP to NDC to all of them. Reason i advocate for one bag from which we pick our leaders, because clearly, this multi-party democracy has brought nothing by complete shame, disdain and disappointment.

True we've always had a beautiful and well preserved culture, but we exercised it with class, until the invasion of the nerve center of Ghana(Accra) was masterfully executed by NPP.
We have to change that attitude immediately. Stop that Akwabaa Chop Bar, Akwabaa Restaurant, Akwabaa Hotel, Akwabaa Day Care, Akwabaa Printing, Akwabaa Chicken Spot, Akwabaa Lorry Park, Akwabaa Hospital, Akwabaa Shipping...are we so freaking myopic? Also we need to limit that red, yellow green in our choice of colors. Big is not better, it is robust and disgusting, just as we have allowed expatriates to exploit that tendency, with billboards concealing all our new and beautiful infrastructure, especially along the Airport City development. We are not human!!!

Members of our political class need to wake up - and stop being so naive when dealing with foreigners.
What the geniuses who now rule us should do, is to partner someone like Sir Stelios Haj-Ioannou, the founder of easyjet, to set up a low-cost pan-African airline - flying point-to-point to all Africa's major cities, and to major destinations in north America and Europe: where the national carrier can access the network of easyjet. Ditto utilise the aircraft and maintenance facilities of easyjet.
Given the goodwill Nkrumah's Ghana has across Africa, a reborn Ghana Airways, with a low-cost business model, will definitely be widely patronised.
70 shares to Sir Stelios will mean that Ghana need not worry about the airline becoming a drain on the national treasury, as the day to day running of the business will be left in the very capable hands of one of the international airline industry's acknowledged profit-making titans.

The real focus should be on making the airports nicer and strengthening the domestic airline sector. If a domestic airline is solid then it can become a regional player and link up with international airlines. A strong local airline could become a subsidiary to British Airways and be the discount connection from the UK. It would just come at a different time and less frequently.

That's another good point. Do we need to own/run at this time an airline at all, or focus on the key objectives? I'd say this, if a strategic partner's demands are reasonable, and our involvement is as little as possible, then it does feed into a bigger objective of preparing the country as a destination for socio-economic tourism. Indeed as we see the need for investment in all areas, including infrastructure, we also need to start pulling our weights together. My only caution is this, the country is very messy just as you have iterated. Discipline is broken at all levels and civic education is out of the window. Politicians that have risen from this state of country are just "flushable" packs, most a disgrace. But how do we start or move forward? We cannot wipe the slate completely clean (my first preference), but hard time leadership is needed, where not just hard of people as a matter of getting the country straightened back on course, but as well hard on self. Something has got to give, else this country is definitely toilet!

The only airline we should be partnering with looking at the trends and as well their growth is Emirates. Perhaps The Qatari's has a special relationship with our President, but any other airline, especially from within Africa will only make us a sub-par airways. We need an airline that can compete with other African airlines, not be a sub of them. We lost our opportunity with KLM back in the days when Kenya decided to partner them, well, let's not loose Emirates from our plans. Even if they ask more, i am confident the leadership that manages Emirates can turn things around for Ghana if given the mandate and the playing field.
