Should somebody tell this Philomena Nyarko that statistics is statistics anywhere you go and in any language. What is the point about all this rationalization and international standards when you are not doing things right, when your computation of price index is disconnected to the realities of your environment, when sectoral weights in the computation of GDP are so counterintuitive, when the basic arithmetic of growth just don't add up. What is wrong with Africans? From CPI to GDP to census, they want to inject politics into everything to do the bidding of politicians. What a shame? How pitiful. I wonder the professional conscience of these people.

Perhaps her worst insult to Ghanaians is her assumption that everyone else is as stupid and mendacious as she.
Meanwhile, as ordinary people struggle to survive, her falsifications perpetuate their despair.

These GSS officials are humans desperate to get rich quick like most public officials under this NDC regime. Though their principles are laudable these principles are not adhered to when it matters most for the state. As the saying goes: when the stakes are high the rules are most unlikely to be followed. And that is exactly what the GSS officials did taking bribes from a corrupt regime to cook up the figures. You lot are persistently dragging our name down the gutter.

The care less lecture by the NPP Deputy Flag bearer, Dr Bawumia, has done perpetual damage to the Ghana Statistical Services - the only dep't which compiles and disseminates the national data for policy formulation and for prospective investors. It is such an important dep't for the nation. All nations depend on their national statistical departments in terms of data collection and presentation and, as such, must be above board. Unfortunately, for Ghana, the revelation by Bawumia has given the department everlasting damage. And, unless a new department with new officers is established, NPP, if they ever take power, will find hard to repair the damage. For me, Bawumia should have been circumspect in beating the drum. He's overplaying the political game and that does not augur well for his party and the nation. He has damaged the country's prestige; he has scored an own goal.

THis demonstrates the short-term thinking of Dr Bawumia.
If NPP were to be in power in 2017, would he still be attacking GSS and BoG, or would he change tack?

It is incumbent upon the GSS to strive assiduously to produce statistics which are dependable so we can avoid the try and error dilemma, regardless of the difficulty involved in the compilation.
One of the cogent reasons Ghana is beating about the bush of socio-economic development is a conspicuously lack of statistics-based decisions. For instance,if one cannot accurately record the number of Kaya Yoos in Accra, how do you formulate a policy to change their standard of living?
If our country can have the benefit of knowledgeable and foresighted leadership,a brilliant governor of the Bank of Ghana well founded in their responsibility to jointly oversee the economy with the government,a superstar of a finance minister who is conversant with what is required of him and a GSS par excellence to put timely and credible statistics at our disposal for good decisions and policies,Ghana will record a meteoric stride.
