Bui Dam not running – VRA

The 400-Megawatt hydroelectric dam at Bui in the Brong Ahafo Region is not running, according to the Volta River Authority (VRA).

Commissioned in December last year, the dam was expected to add to the country’s energy capacity to mitigate the effects of load-shedding in the country.

But speaking to TV3’s Sandra Amarquaye on Tuesday, Samuel Fletcher, the Head of Communications at VRA, said the country’s second hydroelectric dam is not in operation. “You are also aware that CENIT is not running,” he added.

He said quite recently the load-shedding exercise was intensified by 200 – 250 MW as a result of “gas challenges we are experiencing from Nigeria”.

He attributed the situation to repair works being undertaken on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

Mr Fletcher, however, noted that with the coming back on stream of “a few gas plants”, the impact of the load-shedding will reduce from Tuesday, September 2.
