Ghana has three hydroelectric dams: Akosombo dam, Kpong hydroelectric dam and the newly constructed Bui dam. Aside this we have the Aboadze power and Takoradi power plants. I am sure by now we can all conclude that the decision to invest in the West Africa Gas Pipeline was not a prudent one because Nigeria has admitted that they would not be able to supply us with the gas that we need.
However what is disturbing is that the additional power being generated is not being used by our industries or consumers. We supply Togo, Benin and Nigeria through two grids one in the south and one in the North. We also supply ivory coast and Burkina Faso with electricity. Inspite of this the cost of electricity to the average consumer has not declined and many would tell you that it is very expensive. There is another thing I don't understand. The government sometimes tells us there is power crises meanwhile electricity supply to other countries from Ghana continues unabated.
A look at the map of the national electricity grid would tell you straight away that the at least 12 Akyem districts in the Eastern Region which make up more than half the population of the region have been cheated.
In the load shedding exercise it is imperative that some key areas be left out. This should include where the three arms of government work and reside like Sakumono where MPs (representatives) reside and flag staff house and osu castle where the President works and resides. Where the chief justice works and resides should also be included. It should also include the premises of key government institutions like ministries. We need to quadruple our electricity production within the next four years but not through foreign investors.

What I really want to know from energy commission is whether they know specific lines that supply industries across the country and homes for that matter. I ask this because we can generate more than what industry demand through solar energy and since most industries really work during the day, they will spend less on storage at night and utilize the sun for their business during the day at more cheaper cost. And if we directly manage the lines of industries it becomes easier for us to built solar farms specifically for industries. The bad news is that electricity cost is going to be expensive and will never come down, the earlier we invest in solar energy, the better for us all instead of useless thermal plants of which we spend $4.5m a day to buy crude oil to power them. the operational cost alone is absurd. we can create thousand of jobs if we are serious. the $10m for youth fund should have been invested in a Solar project. Today, Solar industry in germany is the fastest growth and the leading entity pushing their economic growth and it's employing much more people than any sector in germany. Its funny, germany want to have 98% of their energy from Renewable energy by 2030 and a country with all the Renewable energy resource want to have 10% in 2020 how sad. Is it lack of vision or making extra cash on crude oil by few people in office.

I've been to Germany three times and I was just amazed about their energy resources and future plans. I just one day we get a true leader who will lead Ghana to the promise land.

King,Mask and Ronny thank you. One of the useless argument so called 'expects in Ghana' brings up is cost of solar panels and storage. Funny, solar cells have be falling the past ten years and makes solar panels cheaper, as for storage only uneducated fool will say there is none. there numerous out there from converting steam generated from solar panels and storing them to turn turbines at night, there is also the hydrogen. Today there are highly design batteries that last 5,10,15 years. so there is no excuse not to use solar. the most important thing is to use just a fraction of our brains to implement series of these technologies in our country. those you industries who needs power during the day does not need much storage units so technically you pay way much less for solar panels for your business. business and institution should take bold steps to start rolling out such projects and I will offer free consultancy for them.

Well said the mask and King but the real problem is directors, ministers and civil servants at the energy commission and energy commission. they just not innovative enough. I went to inquire about solar license and to my surprise, I was told they are issuing any new license for Solar farm to connect to the grid. the reason being that, there are alot of people submitting for license and they are finding it difficult to manage them. meanwhile only one out of maybe 30 companies have been or is close in issuing license in the wholesale sector. I just dont get the efficiency of this institutions in helping Ghana harvest this important resource to produce power. At the energy commission I met very young men and women with great ideas but the head of this institution are vision-less and corrupt issues license to party faithfuls when they have not even gone through the first phase of acquiring license. I'm very sad for Ghana because we all focus on the president for answers (regardless his incompetence)when the real guys whose job is to help bring harness this resource are impeding the it and indulge in series of corrupt act. since the inception of energy commission how many license have they issues to companies in Ghana and how many kw and mw have they generated. if energy commission cannot tell us the benefits the country is getting from them, I suggest we close down the office. And again their job as regulatory office is useless because it seems PURC, ministry of energy are all doing the same thing. we really need radical change in most of our institution they are the once hiding behind party politics to hide their incompetence and turn around to blame the president.

These are always talks including the so called Mere 155mw, the biggest in west africa. they first publication was in 2012 and every three months up to early this year, they were still publishing it. there are almost 30 companies and business applying for license in wholesale in the PV since the introduction of RE Acts and Feed-in tariff of $0.20cent/kw but surprisingly none has receive operational license only to hear corrupt activities by energy commission given out license to their political party friends who have not even reached the second phase of procedure to attain operational license and we are still in darkness.
