India is self sufficient in food production to a large degree partly because the minister for agriculture under Indira Gandhi went into farming, he turned his cricket ground into a farm. Once he understood what the green revolution was, he went out to implement government policy, built up the institutions particularly finance and research.
Minister get off your office and take the road that the great Colonel Frank Benarsko took in 1972-1974. Provide soft loans, silos, irrigation and machinery.

Forty four years ago, General Kutu Acheampong and Brig. Bannasko prompted us into Operation Feed Your Self, but what did we do? We ran them out of town when there were no climate change then?
And with climate change, most Asians are still using oxes as a mean to plough the land for our rice.

Instead of a continued attitude of lamenting the prevailing situation, the Minister and the gov't will need to have a second look at the trade liberalisation policy of the country, gov't's own policies on boosting agriculture and how easily accessible are financial facilities for small-holder farmers and interest rates on such funds. One also needs to question the what infrastructure the Minister talks about here. This seems to me to an abstract talk without specifics. How are the so-called MASLOC funds disbursed? The Minister and gov't must refrain from such hypocritical lamentation and set them themselves to work well. If the Minister and gov't are really worried and thus serious about the way forward to curbing this trend, they need to sit down and take a critical look at the various tax incentives enjoyed by foreign investors vis=a-vis local farmers if any at all. We are fed up with such lofty talks from gov't.

The entire gov't is at its wits' ends. Undoubtedly, our gov't has no focus, has lost vision, if it has practical one at all, for the nation. The leadership has proven by its incompetence that it's not up to the task for which it begged Ghanaians for the mandate. All the leadership does is to heap insult upon insult on Ghanaians for being critical on them. It's a shame that 'BEGGING' has become the norm of gov't: from President to MMDCEs all begging. Begging our development partners for the pittance they give as grants and loans. What is even so nauseating on gov't's part is TO BEG for the release of funds of loan agreements for which gov't commits the nation to servicing with interests. You continue paying interest on funds that haven't been released. The leadership only exposes its incompetence and impotence by lamenting to Ghanaians about slow pace of release of funds by China. If gov't feels so impotent to ensure that the EXIM Bank of China complies timely release of the tranches of the loan as per the agreement, how about judiciously managing the internally generated revenues? Monies are paid to companies for no work done from funds generated internally. Gov't keeps throwing such issues in our face and takes Ghanaians for blockheads. We have such Ministers parading around, flounting their weight around with impunity as if there's nothing wrong with the system. It's a real shame.

It is interesting to hear the NDC gov't led by John Mahama and Amissah Arthur bemoan the dwindling fortunes of the agricultural sector in terms of the increasing food importation into the country.
Can the NDC gov't give us the figures on the percentage of our GDP that is invested or ploughed back into agriculture, which employs about 50 - 60% of the populace in the informal sector, going by conservative estimates? Can the NDC gov't give Ghanaians the figures so the discourse can be situated in the right perspective.
The NDC gov't just cannot do it, there's no vision. This is by far the worst gov't ever in Ghana. How can Ghana progress with such a gov't?
Does the NDC gov't remember Lula Da Silva and John Kufuor and the award they received from the World Food program and it's meaning for growth, development and food security?
The fact still remains that, unless the NDC gov't is voted out, Ghana is going nowhere, fact.

It is no surprise to me anymore, that Mahama's government is filled with incompetent people who are fond of saying stupid things to the public at any chance they get.
Two days ago, it was the Minister of Energy and Petroleum who grabbed the chance he got to address the public and Board Members of Petroleum Companies. In his address, he appealed to the Petroleum Companies to educate Ghanaians about conservation of energy. To me, that was a stupid statement for a Minister to make because we already know that, and as a matter of fact, we do not use energy unwisely being mindful that our consumption always is reflected in the monthly bills. That is, the more we use energy(wisely or unwisely)the higher the monthly bills. So with that in mind, how could he (Minister of Energy and Petroleum)in his right mind make that kind of stupid remark?
Now, today, it is the turn of the Minister of Agriculture to make his stupid statement. According to the print above, the Minister of Agriculture Mr. Clement Humado said, the large importation of foreign food into the country is a reason Ghana's foreign reserves is being depleted.
As the nation's highest government official in charge of the nations agriculture are you not ashamed of yourself for making that stupid statement?.
What good are you if you cannot use your high office to make our farmers feel proud and important in whatever they do to feed us.
Mr.Hamudo, since you assume the Ministry, can you pin point to anything at all by way of incentivizing the farmers? or did something for the farmers as an appreciation for their devotion to till the land so as to feed Ghanaians?
I have never seen anything like that from you. Also, I believe you signed the import permit to importers to import foreign foods into the country and now that the imported foods are in the country how come that you've turn around to question or express your concern about it or you are simply saying that just to instill fear into the very importers you helped before so that they'll increase the 10% corrupt fee you people are known to be collecting?.
Mr. Hamudo, if you have any desire to help Ghana feed itself, the best you can do is to help the farmers rather than to be a stumbling block, and also throw in some incentives so that they'll be encouraged to grow more and harvest abundance for Ghanaians to have plenty to eat.
Mr. Hamudo, do you in earnest think Ghanaians are that stupid?
Please, give us some credit and refrain from saying stupid things just to deceive us.

“The way forward to arresting the situation therefore is to build appropriate infrastructure that can sustain our current productions and also buy into our export market".
What does the above vague statement mean? How does it explain the way to solve the problems listed by Mr. Humado? Why do we appoint people just to tell us the very problems known to us in order to pay them? Why do these ministers think outsiders (who know less about our environment than themselves) can solve our problems and yet remain at post to be paid? I don't think these so called ministers have a shame. This begging culture is in fact is very disgraceful and it's hard the we do something about it. I think people must be made to show how they intend to solve problems before they are given a portfolio.

YES, I called this absolute nonsence. Since when did we realize this problem? At least basing it off from my age I came to conceptually witness Acheampong's era of "OPERATION FEED YOURSELF" and since then (the 70s) we haven't achieved a self-sustaaining agriculture. How many agric minister and their deputies have come and gone receiving massive pays from the tax-payers? How many people are still unemployed? Who is opening our doors for those imports that have killed our local farmers: livestock and farms? Who have the power and resources to reverse all of these? GOVERNMENT. And what have the gov'ts done? Minimal to absolute nothing. Ever since Adam smith theory of COMPARATIVE/RELATIVE ADVANTAGE (I dispute that theory) got shoved into our throats and minds and we bought into it limiting Africans to be agro-based and raw material producers, we have NEVER been able to provide for ourselves with basic food. Even America that is deemed as Industrialist country is able to have more than enough food and buffer stock for 5 years should anything happens(as drought) b'cos they know and apply BASIC principle of provinding these need and you will have sustained economy and enjoy tranquility for progress.
Our gov'ts have failed MASSIVELY beyond expression: NO SUSTAINED CONTINUOUS TREATED WATER, POWER.
In basic business principle if any resource is not yielding results but only cost, you get rid of it or redeploy. I THEREFORE CALLED ON THOSE MINISTERS AND THEIR COHORTS WHO ARE NOT YIELDING ANY RESULTS TO BE CUT OFF OR REDEPLOYED TO THE FARMS TO GO AND EARN THEIR PAY CHECK THERE.
MY SOLUTION:
1. Resort to mechanized farming
2. Subsidize agric at least with pesticide, unharmiful chemicals
3. Form cooperatives and support the farmers with machinery,
4. Discourage food importation by placing high tarrifs and customs duty on them (the same way the West have put on our processed cocoa such that it is cheaper to export the raw beans than the processed cocoa).
Mr. Miniter, please think, orchestrate strategic plans and execute them as NATIONAL AGENDA WITH PARLIAMENTARY APPROVAL, not just partisan plans to be thrown out soon as another party takes over. THAT IS KILLING GHANA AND THE WHOLE OF ARFICA.
WE HAVE A BIG PROBLEM, VERY MASSIVE ONE AND UNTIL WE FIGURE OUT HOW TO SOLVE THEM WE WILL DIE IN OUR RICHES AND FOREINERS WILL COME AND TAKE OUR RICHES AWAY IN A DIFFERENT WAY BUT WITH SAME MOTIVE AS IN THE COLONIAL ERA.

RELAUNCH OPERATION FEED YOURSELF PLEASE
IT WORKED AND IT CAN WORK AGAIN.
Shame on our government always begging for help.Ghana has more fertile lands and minerals than Israel 100 times yet we are asking them to invest in Ghana.

People dont have these, so they grow what they need and only sell the surplus.
Please don't blame climate change and stop asking foreigners to invest in the agric sector when your own government won't invest. It appears like this is another "talk show". Take pragmatic steps towards solving the nations f ...
