Tackie-Komme keen to resolve confusion in Ghana Boxing

Following the near-mar of last Saturday’s meeting by the self-proclaimed Committee for Professional Boxing Stakeholders (CPBS), Hon. Wallace NiiTackie-Komme is reiterating his bid to head the administration of the sport in this country.

Hon. Tackie-Komme, Acting Chairman of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA), says apart from his own all-inclusive administrative style, he has the support of not only the Accra Metropolitan Assembly where he is also Assemblyman and Chairman of their Youth and Sports sub-committee, as well as the financial backing of top corporate bodies.

“All the stakeholders at the meeting including current GBA board members and top promoters like Mr. Manly-Spain, AlhajiToffic, Gideon Quartey, even current Vice President Ahene Truly as well as experienced boxing people like Atta Eddie Pappoe, J.A. Annan, Dr. Quaye, Coach Alloway, all of them understood that we must go to congress to elect our leaders,” Hon. Tackie-Kommesaid.

He added: “That is why I’m appealing to government and the National Sports Authority to approve a date for the congress where I will stand for President. My main target is to build boxing arena in Accra, that is my main vision.”

The meeting at the Baiden Powell Hall in the heart of Accra sought to discuss a promulgation of a new constitution for professional boxing in Ghana as well as decide on a date for congress and election of executives to run the sport.

According to Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, Secretary of the CPBS, as per the Sports regulations LI 1988 which replaces the old regulations LI 1088 which prescribes that the formation of sports associations (both amateur and professional) and election of executive officers should be vested in the hands of persons interested in that sport registered with the National Sports Authority (NSA) and in accordance with the association’s own constitution.

Last Saturday’s meeting, he explains, was to present a draft constitution to the stakeholders for consideration and resolution on the proposed GBA congress as well as nomination and selection of an interim board to take charge of the proposed congress.

“This is in line with the actions being taken by the Committee for Professional Boxing Stakeholders to resolute on the proposed GBA congress. The committee’s role is catalystic, that is aiding the process and not taking charge of GBA affairs,” explained Mr. Ntiamoah-Noakye who is also CEO of Box Office Sports Promotions.

He further stated that the CPBS had been forced into taking action because they had written several letters to current GBA President Samir Captan, whose position is by government appointment, to meet the stakeholders with his board but to no avail. Their doors, he assures, is still wide open for Mr. Captan to come on board though.

“The Committee would be most grateful if Mr. Samir Captan who is also a stakeholder will come on board to chair the interim board to prepare for the proposed GBA congress to fulfill the legal requirement of the law,” Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye said.

Meanwhile, Hon. Tackie-Komme can’t wait for the congress and elections as he is keen to bring developmental changes into Ghana boxing. He pledges to include everyone associated with the game in decision-making so as to rescue the sport from the insistent decline.

“I have the support of the AMA and some big businesses in the country. I will also work with all the stakeholders, coaches, managers, promoters and the media. I will bring everybody on board,” he has promised.

Wallace Nii` Tackie-Komme added: “And who says I’m too young? I am in my second term as Aseemblyman and I’ve managed lots of boxers. Moreover, we need someone who is calm and can face up to all issues and solve amicably. I think I’m that person.”
