Yakubu Amidu stops Nigeria's Kodo in three

Accra, Nov 12, GNA - Yakubu Amidu, national and West African super featherweight champion kept his undefeated record intact when he stopped Nigeria's Emeka Kodo in the third of their scheduled eight rounder at Lebanon House in Accra early Sunday morning. Fighting on the main card of Fight Night Three on the Men Only Championship Boxing Promotion, Amidu subjected his opponent to severe beating, forcing referee, Dan Nunoo Mensah to stop the fight mid way in the third round.

Amidu opened up in the first round and chased Emeka round the ring, delivering stiff left jabs which however failed to open up the defence of the Nigerian, who countered feebly to reduce the tempo of the chase. Round two saw Amidu intensifying the pressure on his opponent who appeared unwilling to mix up.

The chase continued with Amidu cutting the ring to force Emeka to fight and when he succeeded in doing that, it became apparent that the fight would not go the distance.

Emeka began to groan any time Amidu connected his power laden punches which increased in delivery and precision, as the Nigerian had slowed down considerably and had become more vulnerable due to immobility.

Amidu opened fire in the third round and gave Emeka no breathing space and when the Nigerian appeared to be in great danger, the referee stepped in between the two boxers and waved the fight to a close. Despite the disappointment of fans due to the early end of the main card, some of the under-cards produced championship thrills and spills to fire the fans back into great excitement.

The real thriller was an eight round super featherweight contest between Seth Neequaye of Sagacious Gym and Prince Ofotsu of Wisdom gym. The fight was action packed, with both boxers exhibiting excellent ring-craft, bravado and precise punching ability.

The hard hitting Neequaye was the aggressor of the two in the early rounds and by the third round, Ofotsu's right eye had become swollen and puffy.

Ofotsu then decided to box and got into his rhythm, jabbing and thundering solid rights to counter any time his opponent struck. He used his superior reach to keep Neequaye at bay and when they got into close quarters, Ofotsu was the more intelligent, as he kept his gloves high to his chain and looked for openings in the defensive pose of his opponent.

In the end, the two boxers gave the fans their money's worth in an all action fray that drew cheers from the ringside. Ofotsu got a unanimous decision while Neequaye demanded a rematch 'as soon as possible.'

In other fights of the made for television show, sponsored by Far East Mercantile, distributors of Men Only range of deodorant products, and supported by Azar Paints and Onetouch, Herbert Quartey of Attoh Quarshie Gym recorded a seventh round technical knockout win over Sam Adotey in an eight round super bantamweight fray.

Leonard Okoe of Will Power Boxing Club won by a technical knockout when he met Quaye Kotey of Stadium Club in a six round featherweight contest, while Sam Amoako of Bukom Club gained a unanimous decision over Aminu Turkson of Attoh Quashie Gym.

Frank Dodzi of Panix Club recorded a third round TKO over Joe Nyame of Stadium Club in a super lightweight duel scheduled for eight rounds.
