Allotey Fails to win Title

Willie Limond (scotland) put up a splendid performance to win the Commonwealth lightweight title when he beat Ghana's Kpakpo Allotey on points.

Limond's performance went from a standing count of eight for Allotey to a 12th-round crescendo which saw the Scot leap on the ropes at the final bell in the full and certain expectation that the judges would give him the decision.

Limond, 27, made the mistake of wearing a new pair of ring boots for his appointment with the African champion from Bokum who was paying his second visit to Glasgow where he also lost to Craig Docherty in 2004.

The man who almost gave up boxing to go back to his trade as a joiner was even posing for celebratory photographs before the unanimous verdict in his favour was announced to a thrilled-capacity crowd.
