Lokko: Gov’t should save ailing boxing gyms

Ghanaian Boxing trainer, Lawrence Lokko, is appealing to government to set up a special fund for boxing gyms that contribute athletes to represent Ghana at international competitions.

Though it is a well-known fact that these gyms in Ghana lack the basic requirements and rudiments for training, the gyms have produced world class boxers to represent the nation at international tournaments.

The Attoh Quarshie gym, the Bronx gym, etc just to mention a few, are in a deplorable state and if care is not taken by authorities, Ghana, in the next few years, may fail to produce a world class boxer.

Lawrence Lokko, who is the owner of Bronx Gym at Mantse Agbonaa in Accra, believes the various gyms, together with Amateur boxing, have received less support from the state, hence hampering the growth of boxing in Ghana.

“The reason why we have not been able to produce world title is because our gyms are not up to standard. If you compare where we train and where others train outside Ghana, it’s overwhelming.”

“We cannot do this alone, the government will have to come in to support, it’s so difficult investing money into boxing, I’m appealing to the government to set up a fund to take care of the gyms.”

“If we are able to do this, we will be able to produce the world class and champions that we have been craving for all these years.”
