Inter-regional amateur boxing championship comes off

Sunyani, (B/A) June 6, GNA - This year's Inter-Regional amateur boxing championship would be held at the Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani from June 11-15. The Greater Accra, Ashanti and Upper East Regions are to present eight boxers each while the Central Region will presents four participants.

The Upper West, Volta, Western, Eastern, Northern and Brong-Ahafo Regions will feature six boxers each in the competition. Mr. Edward E. Wilson, Brong-Ahafo Regional Sports Development Officer, announced this at a press conference on Thursday in Sunyani to create the necessary awareness about the championship. Mr Wilson said that the criteria for the selection of the participants were based on the competence and performance of the boxers who represented their various regions in last year's competition at Winneba in the Central Region.

He reminded the participating regions that the Council would organise a medical examination and weighing for the selected boxers. The main championship would commence on June 13 at 1600 hours with Prince Ernest Oduro-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council scheduled to address the closing ceremony. Mr. Wilson disclosed that the gate fee would be GHC 1 and urged the general public to patronise to make the event to make it successful. The Regional Sports Development Officer in assuring the public of maximum security, admonished the participants to exhibit a high sense of professionalism and discipline during the event. Mr. Wilson called on both the electronic and the print media to assist the Council with the needed coverage of the event. Medals, certificates and cash prizes would be presented to the participants.
