Amateur Boxing Association to host UK-based boxing club

Accra, June 10, GNA - The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will play host to United Kingdom-based Haringey Boxing Club.

The regional team will pitch their strength against their UK counterparts in two separate international contests on Friday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 24.

Gideon Quartey, Chairman of GAABA told GNA Sports that all necessary arrangements has been firmed up for the contest but it is the venue, which is yet to be decided. He said the Haringey-based team will arrive in Accra on the morning of Friday, June 19 with an eight-member team including a female boxer. Quartey said the boxers include Luke Robinson (88 Kg), Johnny Archer (69 Kg), Sam Ojomo (57 Kg), David Cinko (69 Kg), Craig Doyley (69 Kg), Kingsley Okolie (75 Kg), Mark McKiernan (81 Kg) and female boxer Leah Flintham (55 Kg) as members of the Club.

The GAABA Chairman said the choice of the Haringey boxing club stems from a long standing relationship between the two Associations. Meanwhile, GAABA has named two teams for the international contests with boxers selected from the Amateur Boxing League. The first team is made up of boxers who are also members of the National Amateur Boxing team, the Black Bombers, with the other group dominated by non-national team members.

The Bombers team includes Frederick Lawson (Welterweight), Habib Ahmed (Middleweight), Jibril Ahmed and Maxwell Amponsah (both Light Heavyweight) and Richard Harrison (Heavyweight).

The other team consist of Joshua Barnor and Nii Ofoli Tetteh (Featherweight), Mathias Sulley, Moses Dormenyo, Ardey Aryee, Ebenezer Sowah and Ebenezer Quartey (Welterweight), Emmanuel Adjei (Middleweight) and Daniel Nartey (Heavyweight).

The Haringey Boxing club is expected to leave for their base on Wednesday, June 24. This the second visit of the UK-based team in the country after a similar trip in February 2008.
