Agbeko Insured for 100 million

Gemini Life Insurance Company a leading insurance company associated with Sports in the country has insured Ghana's Joseph Agbeko 100 million cedis as he fights Mike "Iron Bomber" Kizza of Uganda in the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight title at the Kaneshie Sports Complex on Friday night.

Mr Eric Adane, Executive Director in charge of marketing who presented the insurance cover at a pre-fight conference in Accra on Wednesday said the package is to absorb the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) from any liability.

The 100 million cedis forms part of a renewable insurance package of 840, million cedis to the GBA under two broad names-Promotional Insurance cover and Personal accident cover.

He said the promotional cover, is to provide financial security for licence boxers with the GBA, which include 50 million cedis for Commonwealth bouts, 20 million cedis for African fights and 10 million cedis for any other fights sanctioned by the GBA.

Mr Adane said under the second policy, the GBA is to enter into an agreement with the boxers for a monthly contribution, which would be invested by GLICO, so that the boxers could recoup his investment at retirement.

He said in times of death or any eventuality, GLICO would give 4 million cedis plus whatever would accrue from the boxer's contribution to his dependants.

Mr Adane said plans are advanced for his company to stage a big boxing night in the country.

Ghana would be staging her fifth world title bout on Friday after Floyd Klutei Robertson in 1964, D. K Poison ('75, '76 ) and Azumah Nelson in 1993.

Agbeko whose record stands at 11-11 and nine KOs has predicted a fifth round knockout, while Kizza 16-15-1 is hoping to finish Agbeko in the sixth round.

"I'm here for business and cannot be scared by Agbeko", Kizza said.

Irrespective of the outcome of Friday's fight, Kizza is scheduled to mount the ring in November this year, to fight Mike Brode of the UK in a Commonwealth title bout.

Agbeko, originally scheduled to fight Lewis Mwambo of Zambia had his opponent changed in the last minute, after the Zambian lost to Kizza in the East and Central Africa Championship in Bologna, Italy, last two weeks.

The show sanctioned by the WBF, Ghana Boxing Authority and being put together by Life Time Promotions and Management Syndicate, would staged seven other bouts including three title fights.
