Abuja 2003: Another Ghanaian boxer out

Abuja, Oct 12, GNA - Thomas Aryeetey, one of the two Ghanaian boxers left in the pugilistic segment of the Eighth All Africa Games in Abuja has crashed out.

Aryeetey exited the competition without reaching the medal stage when he suffered a massive 6:20 points decision against Ganiyu Nurideen of Nigeria at the 1/8th stage on Friday night.

The Nigerian dominated the Ghanaian so overwhelmingly that there was no dispute at all about the verdict.

The exit of Aryeetey has further worsened Ghana's plight in boxing, as only bantamweight Lankwei Wilson has reached the medal zone. Win or lose, Wilson is assured of a medal which could be Ghana's only medal at boxing, a sport in which Ghanaians had high hopes before the commencement of the Games.

Commenting on his exploits in Abuja, Wilson said he was looking further than the bronze medal, which he has already secured. He said he would go all out and win his next fight and qualify to vie for the gold.
