Alberta Ampomah: "I was expecting myself to do more"

Ghana weightlifter Alberta Ampomah believes she could have performed much better than she did despite lifting 101kg in the 75+ class division, in the process breaking the national record in the clean and jack at the Olympic Games in London.

The Olympic debutant lifted 101kg in the 75+ class division at the ExCel Arena on Sunday, 5th August to beat the old record which was held by Dora Abotsie by 1kilo, on her second attempt.

Speaking to www.liquidsportsghana.com, Alberta Ampomah said she could have done much more than she did.

“I was expecting myself to do more but at least I did my best and I’ very happy about it,” she said adding that, “I’m very happy to have set the record.”

“I was excited to have competed on the Olympic platform"

The Olympic debutant failed to lift 97kg on her first attempt but she quickly recovered from her earlier mishap, controlling her nerves on the second attempt and then going onto set the new mark.

“I have never competed in +75kg before. Seeing them ( the crowd) like this really got me nervous. But as I went to the platform to take the weights, I felt normal.”
