AAG: Man spits at Ghanaian team bus

Algiers, July 12, GNA - There was some concern among Ghanaian weightlifters as they headed for their S.T.I.S. training ground for their morning training on Wednesday as an enraged man swore at them and spat three times at the bus conveying them.

The Algerian, who was dressed in a khaki pair of shorts and a brown short sleeves shirt and holding a small bag rushed from the other side of the road towards the bus conveying the Ghanaians as the pilot rider of the weightlifters tried to direct the traffic to pave way for the bus at a roundabout, 200 metres from the Games Village at Ben Aknoun.

The man shouted what appeared to be curses or insults at the bus and raised his hand towards the skies and directed three rounds of spittle at the bus, as he tried to catch up with it.

His action attracted attention from some of the weightlifters who were divided in opinion about the intent of the man.

While some thought he was one of those opposed to Algeria hosting the Games, others thought he was insane, though no school of thought could convince the other.

Meanwhile the police pilot rider succeeded in clearing the road for an easy passage for the bus conveying the Ghanaians and left the man at their heels and they got to their destination safely. There is a very heavy security presence in Algiers and every movement by any member of any delegation or team is provided with police escort anytime.

The police and the para-military gendarmes are everywhere on their BMW motor bikes, with each carrying a side arm, while there are numerous check points mounted at road junctions and other strategic points in the capital.
