16 passengers escape death after bus catches fire on Bole-Sawla highway

Sixteen passengers travelling from Kumasi to Wa narrowly escaped death after the Yutong bus they were travelling on caught fire at Gbogdaa, a farming community along the Bole-Sawla highway in the Savannah Region. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, involving a Yutong bus with registration number GS 8482-17, which was reportedly loaded with electrical materials and other items. Preliminary information from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) indicates that the fire started after an engine oil line split, causing oil to spill onto hot engine components. In a post shared on Facebook on Monday, October 5, the GNFS said its firefighters arrived at the scene at about 8:30 am, brought the fire under control and completely extinguished it by 10:30 am. Despite the extent of the damage, no casualties were recorded, with all 16 passengers reportedly escaping from casualties. The GNFS said further assessment and investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the full extent of the damage.
