Similarly, homosexuality is frowned upon in some developing countries because of religious beliefs, traditional cultural values, colonial-era laws, and social expectations surrounding family and reproduction.

Attitudes toward both practices vary considerably across societies and can change over time.

Perhaps the broader question is whether laws should reflect cultural norms or primarily protect individual freedom, consent and people from demonstrable harm.
