Sports Minister Kofi Adams has explained why the Black Stars players and technical team are yet to receive the final component of their 2026 World Cup bonuses.

Speaking to Asempa Sports, Adams explained the delay is due to ongoing discussions between FIFA and the host countries over tax obligations related to the tournament.

He explained that it has not yet been determined whether the taxes will be paid by the individual players or by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and by extension, the government.

“We haven’t paid because we need to settle the matters of taxes,” Adams said.

The Minister noted that Ghana has already paid a $100,000 clearance fee to FIFA, which he said is higher than the bonuses that are due to the players.

He questioned why the government would deliberately withhold the outstanding bonuses when it has already paid the clearance fee.

“We have paid a clearance fee to them, which is $100,000, higher than those bonuses that is due them. Why do you think we will not pay that?” he said.

Adams said FIFA is still engaging the host countries to resolve the tax matter, and the final decision will determine how the outstanding bonuses are processed.

“Whether it’s going to be the responsibility of individual players to pay the tax, or it’s going to be the responsibility of the member association, and by extension, therefore, the country to pay those taxes.

“Once we conclude on that, then we know whose responsibility it is, then the appropriate deductions is done, and the remainder of the money gets paid. So that is why we are where we are,” he explained.

Adams also stressed that money should not always be viewed as the only source of motivation for the national team.

“Money motivation should not necessarily always be money, because if it is money, we would have done it,” he added.

The Black Stars players and technical team are yet to receive their World Cup bonuses because FIFA is resolving tax issues with the host country.
