Brandon Thomas-Asante has revealed that Coventry City manager Frank Lampard contacted him during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to seek his opinion on Ghana teammate Caleb Yirenkyi before completing the midfielder’s move to England.

Yirenkyi joined Coventry from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in August as the club’s most expensive signing after an impressive breakthrough campaign in Denmark and a memorable World Cup with Ghana.

Thomas-Asante, who played alongside the 20-year-old for both club and country, says Lampard was already convinced by Yirenkyi’s ability but wanted additional insight from someone who knew him personally.

“I don’t take too much credit, maybe a little. Frank Lampard called me during the World Cup and he was very honest with his appreciation for Caleb and asked me for my opinions on him,” Thomas-Asante told Premier League TV.

“The club were aware of his talent and many clubs across the world,” he added.

Yirenkyi subsequently completed his move to Coventry and has made an encouraging start to life in English football.

He provided an assist in a 2-0 pre-season victory over AS Monaco before starting Coventry’s Premier League opener against Arsenal.

The Ghanaian midfielder then registered another assist in Coventry’s 4-2 League Cup victory over Plymouth Argyle, setting up Taiwo Awoniyi inside the opening three minutes.

His reputation had already soared at the World Cup after he scored Ghana’s stoppage-time winner against Panama.

Thomas-Asante has since described Yirenkyi as the “modern N’Golo Kante” and believes his quiet confidence will help him thrive.

Coventry will face fellow promoted side Hull City in their first home league game of the season on Saturday.
