Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu delivered impressive performances in the men’s 100m heats at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday, July 27, 2026, finishing among the fastest athletes to secure qualification to the semi-finals.

Azamati was the standout performer, clocking 10.00 seconds to rank first overall in the heats, while Saminu followed closely behind with 10.01 seconds.

However, it was a disappointing outing for fellow Ghanaian sprinter Isaac Botsio, who finished 29th overall with a time of 10.40 seconds.

Only the top 17 fastest times progressed to the semi-finals, leaving Botsio just outside qualification by 0.16 seconds.

Azamati, who has represented the country at major international competitions including the Olympic Games and World Championships, remained focused despite posting the fastest time.

“Two weeks ago I ran 10.12, so running here has been the best time I’ve ever run in Europe. Anybody could have won the race, so I don’t have to think about having the fastest time. I don’t think about that,” he said.

Saminu, who has emerged as one of Ghana’s promising sprint talents, also kept his focus on the bigger picture.

“It doesn’t matter the weather; my coach always says just show up and do what’s best for you. I’m just here to do my best and maybe make it to the final. There’s a lot in the bucket. I just need to reserve it for the semi-finals,” he said.
