The 2026 FIFA World Cup got off to a dramatic start on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the iconic Azteca Stadium as co-hosts Mexico secured a 2-0 victory over South Africa in a match filled with goals, controversy, and three red cards.

With thousands of Mexican fans creating a deafening atmosphere, the hosts wasted little time taking control. Just nine minutes into the tournament, Julian Quiñones etched his name into World Cup history by scoring the opening goal.

The forward capitalized on a costly mistake from South African midfielder Yaya Sithole, who lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Mexico to punish Bafana Bafana early.

Mexico dominated much of the first half and could easily have extended their advantage before the break. Raul Jimenez was denied on multiple occasions by South Africa captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, while Quiñones struck the post as the hosts continued to pile on the pressure.

South Africa’s hopes suffered a major blow in the second half when Sithole’s difficult evening went from bad to worse. The midfielder was shown a straight red card after bringing down Bryan Gutierrez as the Mexican attacker raced toward goal.

The dismissal opened more space for Mexico, and Jimenez eventually doubled the lead with a well-taken header from Roberto Alvarado’s cross. The goal carried extra emotion for the veteran striker, who celebrated his first World Cup goal years after recovering from the serious head injury that threatened his career.

The drama did not end there. Substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off after a VAR review spotted an off-the-ball incident involving Alvarado. Mexico then finished the match with ten men after defender Cesar Montes received a red card for stopping a South African counterattack.

Despite the late controversy, Mexico comfortably opened its World Cup campaign with three points and a memorable victory.
