Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a hero’s welcome on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, upon his return to Mogadishu after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to visa issues that prevented him from entering the United States.

Despite the disappointment of being denied the opportunity to officiate at football’s biggest tournament, Artan was greeted by an outpouring of support from government officials, football stakeholders and ordinary Somalis eager to celebrate one of the country’s sporting trailblazers.

There will be a meeting between Artan and Somalia’s Prime Minister, followed by a press conference attended by a large media contingent.

A special dinner will also be planned in his honour later in the evening.

Attention now turns to the Somalia Premier League clash between Dekedaha and Heegan, where an estimated 30,000 fans are expected to be in attendance.

At half-time, Artan will be formally welcomed by supporters and given the opportunity to address the crowd.

Speaking after arriving home, the referee thanked the Somali people for their unwavering support during a difficult period.

“I sincerely thank the leaders and the entire sports family of Somalia. I want to express my gratitude to the Somali people for their encouragement and solidarity,” he said.

The referee also acknowledged the support of the Somali government, the Somali Football Federation, FIFA and CAF.

Looking ahead, Artan vowed not to let the setback define him.

“Insha Allah, I promise you all that I will be at the next FIFA World Cup in 2030. I will return stronger and better prepared. I will continue to work hard, carry the Somali flag with pride and never give up,” he added.
